Reading/Word Work Time

Good Morning and Happy Tuesday Everyone,

It is the last week of school, can you believe it?!?!? I hope you all had and amazing Memorial Day Weekend. I am going to make this week very short. If you are still doing daily lessons, we only have lessons for today and tomorrow or you can do them all week long. A lot of things you will have finished with. There is no more Mountain Language, Spelling, Wonders, Junior Achievement, Writing Assignments, Go Math. All of those things you are finished with....including Lexia if you made it to level 13. Congratulations to all of you that did. Look at all the things we accomplished this year. You are all amazing and you did a fantastic job. For those of you that did your work through our daily lessons, I am so glad you stuck with it. Some days were pretty long and we had a lot to do but you did it. You ROCK!!!! We are not going to be doing much this week since it is the last week of school. I am going to break up the stuff between today and tomorrow. If you are still working on daily lessons, just think. only two more days and you are done with school work from me. We have done so much this year and I am so happy to see so many of you learn and grow. Lets get started on the last two days of school work.

Mountain Language #YOU ARE DONE!!!

Lexia

Today we are doing Lexia for those of you who still need to get to level 13 or those that want to keep working on it. You may be able to do this during the summer Click on the link below and get started. Work hard for the next 30 minutes and don't forget to do some reading as well today. If you can't do both, just focus on Lexia if you haven't reached level 13 yet.

Story Packet

Today in your story packet we will be doing the following pages. This is the last packet of the year. Like I said, I will be breaking up the homework between the next two days. Don't worry there won't be a whole lot for you to do. Here is the first page of the packet. It is a story called "The Shoemaker and the Elves". I'm sure you have heard this before. It is a German Folktale. Remember that a Folktale is an old story that's been told again and again, often for generations. ... Folktales are stories in the oral tradition, or tales that people tell each other out loud, rather than stories in written form. They're closely related to many storytelling traditions, including fables, myths, and fairy tales. Read the next two pages and get ready to answer the questions on the third page.

Use the story above to answer the questions on this page. You can do the think about it on the bottom of this page.

On this next page you are going to write the word on the lines. It says you will not use all of the words. Look at number 1. A pair of pants.....A pair of pants is called a pair of trousers, so you would write trousers on the line. Now see if you can do the rest by yourself. If you need some help, ask your parents.

That is all that we are going to do out of the Story Packet. Now we have one small paper left to do in small group time. Get out the paper that looks like this. On this side of the page you are looking at Conjunctions. A conjunction combines two sentences. You do this by using the conjunctions or words or, and, because, so, or but. You are going to put both the sentences together using a conjunction and write it as one sentence. Let's look at #1. "He wanted to play outside. It started to rain." To combine these two sentences I would use the word but. I would write the following sentence on the line...."He wanted to play outside but it started to rain." Now see if you can do it for the rest of the sentences using the words in the box to combine them into one sentence.

On the back of this page you are going to do Author's Purpose. Remember that an Author writes with three purposes in mind and it spells P.I.E. First an Author may write to persuade you. They want you to think or believe the way they do. The second reason an Author may write something is to inform you. It is giving you information about something. The third reason an Author may write something is to entertain you. Just something fun for you to read. You are going to look at the different types of books and decide if they are books that would persuade you, inform you, or entertain you. Now whoever ran this off did not realize that you would need to cut the books on the right side out. You can either write down the types of books or just make sure your parents looked at the other side of the page and see that you completed it and then you can cut the books out. Lets take a look at the different categories and the genre of the books that could go there. A recipe book is teaching you how to do something so it is Informing you. You would put the recipe book under inform. A book on reviews is giving you someones opinions on something or it is trying to persuade you to think the way the Author is thinking so you would put that under persuade. Fairy Tales would be something that would entertain you, so you would put that book under entertain. Do your best and ask your parents for help.

Okay that is the end of the reading block for today. We only have one page of math and number of the day so you may just want to get it done instead of taking a break.

Math Block

Review

Today you should be doing #175. Only 3 more days of school. If you would like to you can do more numbers of the day and go ahead you can finish it off for the year. You only need to do to #178. There are 178 days in the school year.

For your word problem book you can just find the next Monday and Tuesday to do since we weren't here yesterday. You can stop doing the problem book whenever your parents say it is okay.

Today you should be working on arrays. This is something that we did before and it will help you with multiplication. Remember that arrays tell you how many groups of something you have and how many times you have them. Get the following page out. Lets look at the one they did for you. There were 6 dots. First they circled 3 groups in columns or up and down. Each group had two dots in it. So you would write this as an addition sentence the following way. There are 2 dots+2 dots+2 dots, which is the 3 groups. 2+2+2=6. To do the multiplication part they had 3 groups with two in each group so it would be 3 x 2= 6. They also circled the groups in rows or across. The had two rows with three dots in each row. So they circle 3 dots+3 dots, which is two groups. 3+3=6. For the multiplication part they and two groups with 3 dots in it so it would be 2 x 3= 6. See if you can do this page. If not, have your parents help you and then turn the page over and we will do the other side.

On this side of the page you are going to draw the dots for the multiplication problems and then you are going to write the addition and multiplication sentences like you did on the other side. Let's look at the first one. The problem was 5 rows of 3. Remember that rows go across. So they drew 5 rows and each row and 3 dots in it. The addition sentence would show 3 five times. Since there are 3 dots and 5 rows. The sentence would be 3+3+3+3+3=15. For the multiplication sentence it is showing that there are 5 rows with 3 dots in each row, so it would be 5 X 3 = 15. On the next one it has 2 rows of 5 dots in each row. I can't draw that for you but you would have 1 row that has 5 dots and 1 more row under it that has 5 dots. The addition sentence would be 5+5=10. The multiplication sentence would be 2 X 5 = 10 because there are 2 rows with 5 dots in each row and if you count the dots that equals 10. Do the best you can and ask your parents for help if you need it.

Okay we are done with Math today. They are no longer doing Specialty so I have one more thing for you to do and it is something you could do all week. Here is your End of the Year Second Grade Memory Book. You can fill it out and keep it for when you get older. You might find it fun to look at. Its kind of fun to see the things that were important to you when you were younger. This is something that is just for fun. Enjoy and have a great day. Don't forget tomorrow at 10:30 will be Pet Day.
