Reading/Word Work Time

Happy Monday Morning Everyone,

I hope you had a fabulous weekend. Now that we are done with the Wonders Program, Mondays will look a little different. Lucky for you all your parents aren't picking up the homework packets until today so I'm going to keep today kind of mellow. There are still some things you can do and work on without the packets. I'm going to switch today's lesson with tomorrows Lexia time and we will do the packet stuff tomorrow. Something that you will continue to do is Mountain Language, so lets get started with that.

Mountain Language #1-5

You should have one of these papers that you can use from previous weeks. If not you can answer numbers 1-5 on a paper and transfer it to the Mountain Language paper when you get the new packet. The Mountain Language Poster is in the top corner of the screen!

Lexia

Today we are doing Lexia instead of on Tuesday. Next week we will put it back to Tuesday. You will have spelling this week put I will introduce it into the lesson tomorrow when you have your packets. We have been asked by the Principal to really encourage you to get to the 3rd grad level which is level 13. you need to do 20-30 Lexia minutes and 20-30 minutes reading a book. On Lexia don't forget to try and get at least 6 units in that 30 minutes. If you are above level 13, just do your best to get as many units as you can. I know they are harder levels. If you are on levels 10, 11, or 12, keep working hard. Remember we still have the goal for everyone in our class to pass off levels 1-12. I know you can do it, I believe in you!!! Right now we have 9 students working toward that goal. 3 of them are almost to level 13. Keep going! You Can Do It!!!! Click on the link below and get started. Work hard for the next 30 minutes and don't forget to do some reading as well today.

Reading Time

Okay everyone, you did the morning word work. Way to go. Now its time to read for 20 to 30 minutes. Find a nice quiet spot, your favorite book, and maybe a stuffed animal or two and Read, Read, Read!!! If it is okay with your parents you can go to our reading page and do one of the reading programs there instead but make sure you are reading the stories too. Here is the link to the Second Grade Reading Page. This has links to Lexia, Scholastic, Storyline Online, and Raz-Kids as well as some other stories Ms. Halladay thought you might enjoy.

CHAPTER 10

Well good news students, your parents should be bringing home your Number of the day and your word problem book. Today you should be doing #160. Only 18 more days of school!!! You can start where you left off and fill in your number of the day for the days you are behind or just pick a blank page and start with #160. Show your parents how you do it. Don't forget to write include the following information.... (example is for #122) Remember you need to do it for #160.

Standard Form (Number Way) Picture Form Word Form Expanded Form

122 D II : One Hundred Twenty Two 100 + 20 + 2

(H) undreds/ (T) ens/ (O) nes Even or Odd 132 Ten More 222 One Hundred More

1 Hundred 2 Tens 2 Ones Even 112 Ten Less 22-One Hundred Less

Write 4 math problems that equal the number of the day...Examples: 11+11=22, 24-2=22, 55-33=22, 20+2=22

Don't forget to do your number of the day for 160.

For your word problem book you can just find then next Monday in the weeks that you haven't done and start there. When you are done, get your Go Math Book out.

You are going to have to go to figure out how much each person has. Now get out your GO Math Book. We are still on Chapter 10 in the Go Math Book but we will finish up this week. How did the mid chapter text go on Friday? I hope you all did well. Today it is page 481-484. We are going to learn how to us some of our data and put it into a bar graph. First we are going to review a picture graph. Let's take a look at page 481 & 482.

On page 481 you need to use this information to tell how many red trucks the four children all together saw last week. Remember the key says that each read rectangle stands for one red truck so count to see how many red trucks they saw. What did you get as your answer? I got 21. If that's what you got go write it down on the line. If you didn't get that answer, try counting again and see if you come up with something different.

Now lets watch two videos about bar graphs before we get started on page 482.

Okay, I hope those videos helped you learn what a bar graph is. In Model and Draw on page 482, it tells us a bar graph uses bars to show us data. Like a picture graph, this bar graph has a title on the top. It says Children Playing Games. So we know this is going to give us some information or data about Children Playing Games. On the side it says Outdoor Games and we can see next to it that it has some outdoor games listed. They are basketball, jump rope, soccer, and tag. Along the bottom it says Number of Children. So looking at this bar graph I can see that 6 children were playing basket ball, 3 children were playing jump rope, 8 children were playing soccer, and 5 children were playing tag. With this information I could answer all kinds of questions. If you notice at the bottom of the page you have another bar graph. Using this information you are going to answer problems #1-#3. Looking at the Bar Graph we can see that the title says Marbles in a Bag. Along the side we see Numbers of Marbles and along the bottom it says color. With this information we know that there are some marbles in a bag and we can see how many marbles of each color-red, blue, green, and purple are in the bag. Let's look at problem #1. It asks, how many green marbles are in the bag. If we look at the bar graph at the green line we can see that it goes up to number 4 so we would write down 4 green marbles for #1. #2 asks How many more blue marbles than purple marbles are in the bag? If we look at the bar graph we can see that there are 6 blue marbles and only 3 purple marbles so 6-3=3. We just found out that there are 3 more blue marbles that purple marbles in the bag. #3 asks, How many marbles are in the bag? Well to find this out we would have to add all the colored marbles together. There are 2 red, 6 blue, 4 green, and 3 purple so 2+6+4+3=? What do you think the answer is? Well I know that 6+4 =10 and 2+3=5 so if I add10+5 it would equal 15. There are 15 marbles in the bag. Okay, I hope that makes sense to you because now it is your turn to do it on your own. You will do pages 483 & 484.

Read the instructions on this page and do the work yourself. You will use the bar graph information to answer the questions. On #8 you are going to have to add the children that went to the aquarium and beach together. Then you will add the zoo and the museum together and compare the two totals. Tell how the numbers are different.

Follow the instructions on the page 484. Figure out #9-#11 using the bar graph. On #12 you have to pretend that 7 more trees were brought to the farm. Tell how many trees would be at the farm then and explain how you would know. Don't forget to do the test prep questions.

Okay, we are almost done with Math. Ask you parents if they want you to do the pages in the Math homework book for extra practice. It would be page 229 & 230 in your practice book and it looks like this

This is what you were doing on pages 229. Here is a little video about it if you need more help.

You do not need to do # 3 since we have not done measurement yet but you can try to answer the questions by guessing. Remember if you don't answer you have a 100% chance of getting it wrong but if you at least try you have a 25% chance of getting it right.

Okay, I hope you had fun today with math. Tomorrow we will have some more. Since today is Monday there is no specialty. Maybe ask your parents if you could take a little break before writing if you need it. Enjoy the videos from the zoo during writing time.

Animal Reports

Welcome back. You should be finishing up your Fractured Fairy Tales. I have had a couple of students turn theirs into me and they are fantastic. I will share them in our Kids Corner so be looking for those this week. Keep working on yours if you haven't finished yet. We will start working on our animal reports this week. For now I am going to have you watch a couple videos from Hogle Zoo. They were so sad about us not being able to be there this year so they sent this video talking about some of the things we would have learned there. They also let me know that they have some great things on their Facebook Page. Ask your parents if you can get on it and watch some of the great field trips they have where you learn about different animals. I've included one here about giraffes. I hope you enjoy both videos and start thinking about what animal you want to become an expert on! Have a great day!
