Good Morning Students,

I hope you liked the Science Experiments I put on here yesterday. I want you to be having fun. Don't forget that we have our Google Meet Bingo today. Bring your Bingo Card all filled out with everyone's name in our class including yourself and me. Don't forget your skittles. Remember I will have some prizes for the winners. I will be handing out your writing books today after the google meet, and I will have those prizes ready for you as well. Today I won't be doing so much on here just because I am so busy getting everything ready but I did promise James and Payton I would get their stuff up today and Ledger finished his Animal Poster for his Animal report and would like to share it with us. Before I do that, don't forget to get on and watch the Junior Achievement videos and do some of the activities. Here is the link https://sites.google.com/ja.org/ja-k5-vol-videos/ja-ocom-videos#h.p_FViR9TBoLGUq

Now let's get on to honoring our class and their talent. Here is Payton's Wonderful Fracture Fairy Tale. Way to go Payton. I absolutely love it. You did an amazing job. I love this story of the Merman. Thanks for sharing it with us.

That was great. Now let's take a look at Ledger's Animal Poster. He did a great job and I'm so happy we get to share it. Take a look at Ledger's poster about the Dwarf Caiman, which is a small crocodilian, in the alligator family, and it lives in South America. I love what a great job Ledger did on his painting of one. Great job Ledger, it is so cool looking!

Awesome Ledger. Get me pictures of your animal reports, I would love to share them with everyone. Okay James, this is the last thing that I have time to do today but I promised you and I want you to be happy. I hope this puts a smile on your face. Here is information about your 8X8 Rubik's Cube.

the V-CUBE 8 consists of 324 small pieces-cubies and the solid-cross that supports them, so that they can rotate independently on based axes. It holds the record of being the largest, smoothest and most complex rotational puzzle game in the world!

Here's how to solve it.

Okay James, I hope you learned some things. I will do my best to get to the rest of your requests tomorrow. I love you all and hope you have a great day. There are only 6 more days of school and you have a long weekend coming up soon. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Monday, May 18

Happy Monday Everyone,

Today we have a fun Monday planned. We are hoping to start it off with a Google Meet with the Jazz Bear. Now it isn't a for sure thing but they are trying their best to make it happen. I hope you will all be on the Google Meet to see what happens. Here is the Google Meet Login.

meet.google.com/afj-awrk-azd

Keep your fingers crossed that the Jazz Bear will be there. Now there are a couple of things that you kidlets need to do. You will need to put yourself on mute and stay muted until I tell you to unmute. Not only is it distracting and nobody can hear if you are talking but a lot of times there is back ground noise. So please be polite and think of others. I will give you each a chance to talk. You may want to come up with two or three yes or no questions to ask the Jazz Bear. Show him what an amazing class you are.

We are also going to do Junior Achievement On-Line this Week. Hopefully your parents will do it with you and have you do some of the online activities. Here is the link for Day One

https://sites.google.com/ja.org/ja-k5-vol-videos/ja-ocom-videos#h.p_6i_VDJAJLDFc

I hope you will all go check it out. Junior Achievement is a fun way to learn about jobs and our community. We will do one a day for the whole week. I hope you look forward to that.

We will be learning about Sharks this week in our daily lessons. I am going to put some shark videos on here as well as different ones on our daily lessons. You can check them all out.

This week I also want to spend sometime posting what you want to learn about and celebrating our class. I know that I need to get Payton's Fractured Fairy Tale on here. I am want to put those who have finished either their fractured fairy tale or Animal Reports on here as well.

CELEBRATING OUR CLASS

Tomorrow I will also be posting some Science Experiment Videos. You may get to try some of these at home.....Or you may want to come up with your own and share it with the class. Just let me know and I am happy to put any videos, pictures, or work on here to let everyone see how great you are doing!!!

I know we all miss each other and I hope we all get to be together this summer. There are only 9 more official days left of school counting today. I know some of you are already done but if we were in school we would still be counting down. For those that are still hanging out and doing the daily lessons, way to go!!! I hope you will all count down with me.

I will have your writing books done sometime this week I think so hopefully I will see you all again. I will let your parents know as soon as I have them bound. I hope you like them. If you were in school you would get to color your own cover so maybe when you get them you can draw on them with permanent markers. Just don't ruin them because your stories are things that parents like to keep!

Like I said we have a fun filled week coming up, so I hope you will join me in having some fun. Keep checking back here all week and I will have different things going on. I am going to go through all the daily questions, write to me, and check-ins to see what you all want to learn about this last two weeks of school. Feel free to write me and let me know. I hope you have a great day and I will see you back here tomorrow with some science experiments!!! Love ya!!!

Over the next couple of days I will try my best to tell you how to put all of the crafts together. I don't have much on this page yet today but I will be working on it and adding as much as I can. I wanted to make sure I shared some of the Fractured Fairy Tales some of our talented students wrote.

Cinco De Mayo

What You Want To Learn

So Nash said he wanted to learn about plants. I'm just not sure what plants he wants to learn about so I am going to ask him at the Google Meet on Thursday. For now Nash, I am going to give you some information on the Venus Fly Trap.

More Cooking For Kids

Okay Bostyn, maybe this will make you happy that you are still in online learning. Here are some other things that you can try to make this week. Happy cooking.

The Venus flytrap is a small plant, with small leaves. Its clam-shaped leaves look rather like flowers, and so they attract insects. When they are open, they are red and smell sweet. ... Inside the leaves, there are very sensitive, tiny hairs which cause the leaves to snap shut when they are touched.

The Venus flytrap, Dionaea muscipula, is a carnivorous plant (a plant that feeds on small animals, such as insects). Carnivorous plants grow in soil that has little nitrogen. They get nitrogen from the insects they trap.

The Venus flytrap is one of a very small group of plants that can snap shut very quickly. When an insect or spider crawls along the leaves and touches a hair, the trap closes only if a different hair is touched within twenty seconds of the first touch. The two-touch trigger means that little energy is wasted on things that are not food.

Appearance

The Venus flytrap is a small plant, with small leaves. Its clam-shaped leaves look rather like flowers, and so they attract insects. When they are open, they are red and smell sweet. They have stiff hairs on each edge. Inside the leaves, there are very sensitive, tiny hairs which cause the leaves to snap shut when they are touched. Two hairs must be touched to make the leaves close. This makes it more likely that the thing that touched its hair is living.

Nutrition

The Venus flytrap feeds on insects, such as ants, beetles, woodlice, worms, flies, grasshoppers, and moths. First it traps the insect inside its leaves, and then lets out a liquid that helps digest the trapped animal. The plant consumes the insect and takes the nitrogen from the insect's body.

The Venus flytrap makes sugar by photosynthesis. The insects give it nutrients which it cannot get from the waterlogged soil. With the nutrients it can build up enzymes and other molecules which need trace elements as well as sugars and amino acids.

House plants

Venus flytraps were first discovered in North America on the coast of North and South Carolina, where it grows wild near the Cape Fear River. However, people anywhere can grow Venus flytraps in pots. Venus flytraps in pots need water and soil without calcium or nitrogen in it. It is named after the Roman goddess of love, Venus.

Key Facts & Information

SIZE and APPEARANCE

  • A Venus flytrap grows from a bulblike rootstock, bearing a group of small white flowers at the tip of a stem that is 8–12 inches long.

  • The leaves are 3–6 inches long with blades hinged along the midline so that the two nearly circular lobes, with spiny teeth along their margins, can fold together and enclose an insect that lands on them.

HABITAT and DIET

  • The only member of its genus, it is native to a small region of North and South Carolina, where it is common in damp, mossy areas.

  • Venus flytraps rely on nitrogen-rich animal protein to enable their survival in poor soil conditions.

  • The Venus flytrap’s primary prey are ants, but it will also eat flies, beetles, slugs, spiders and even tiny frogs.

  • When the flytrap’s “mouth” is closed, it is airtight. That helps keep out bacteria.

  • There are three stages of a Venus flytrap’s feeding:

    • As soon as a fly lands, sensory hairs, called trichomes, on the inside of the petals count the movements from the insect. There must be at least two movements in 20 seconds or the petals won’t close.

    • The plant then closes its jaws by snapping from a convex to a concave shape. The bristles on the edges of the leaves prevents the insect from escaping.

    • The plant then starts to digest the insect using digestive juices. After five to 12 days, the plant will reopen and the parts of the bug that couldn’t be digested fall out.

  • The trap on the plant has a limited number of lives. After each capture, the trap of the plant remains closed for up to 10 days, preventing it from receiving additional nutrients.

  • The trap of the plant can only open and close around half a dozen times before it permanently closes. The trap will continue to photosynthesize to provide nutrients to the plant, but will be unable to trap insects.

  • The Venus flytrap is an area of interest for robotics scientists in the U.S. and in South Korea who are attempting to build robot replicas that can catch and digest their own fuel.

Good Monday Morning My Sweet Students,

Just want you to know I have been thinking of you all weekend. I sure enjoyed seeing you on Friday. I love all the wonderful, sweet signs you made for me! You are the best students ever and I miss you all so much. I will be working on this page today and try to have some fun things on here but for now until I get it done I'm going to share some of the pictures your parents shared with me this weekend! Again, thank you so much. I love you all and I hope you have a wonderful Monday.

Teacher's Parade On Friday

I loved all the wonderful posters. Thank you all. I wish I had gotten pictures but I was busy trying not to fall out of the truck. Scott's and Ella's moms sent me these pictures. Hello All You Great Kidlets!!!

I sure loved talking to you yesterday. It gets kind of crazy and you can't hear each other much but I like to do those whole class meets once in a while, just so you can see some of your friends. I think Bentley had a great idea and next time we will have you all put yourself on mute until I get a chance to talk to you. Then you will have a chance to talk and tell us all about what has been going on with you. Kind of like when we pass my frog, and whoever is holding it gets to speak. Only you will just have to pretend it you are holding the frog. I'm so sorry that it was cut a little short. I pushed something that said "See All" and I thought that it would let me see all of you but that wasn't the case. It took me out of Google meet and when I tried to get back in it wouldn't let me. When I finally got back there were only about 5 or 6 students still there. Oh well, I learned not to push buttons while on google meet. I hope I get to see you all tomorrow at the Teacher Parade. We will be leaving the school at 12:30 and driving through different neighborhoods. The maps should be available on the Westfield weekly so have your parents check and see if we are coming somewhere close to you!!! I love you and I hope you have a fantastic day!!!

What You Want To Learn

Well I have been going through all of my messages and daily check ins and write to me pages to see if I have missed putting up things you want to learn about and I am running out of things to do. I want your ideas. I know a lot of you have said animals but you have to be specific. There are a million animals out there! Tell me what you want to know more about.

Bostyn wanted to know about Disney Cruises so here is a little information for you Bostyn. Here's some fun things to do on a Disney Cruise. Just remember if you go on one, you got to take me!!! :0)

Happy Earth Day

Happy Earth Day Everybody,

I hope you are having a fabulous day. Today I'm going to give you some more information about Earth Day. Since we aren't together to learn about it, I thought I would give you some information in your lesson today and a little more information here. I hope you had a good time doing your Earth Day Packets. I'm so excited to see everyone today on the Google Meet. I can't wait. I miss you all so much. I hope you all have a good time and get to see your friends. Now on to Earth Day!!!

Earth Day 2020

Earth Day is celebrated every year on the 22 of April for the last 47 years. In 1970, a US Senator from Wisconsin, created this national day to create awareness of the environment and how we treat nature. Today this day is celebrated as an international event in 193 countries. On Earth Day we think about the Earth and how we can make sure that we continue to have Earth's Resources by taking care of it. Here is a video that tells you more about Earth Day and what we do to help protect the earth. This video also gives you some information about the History of Earth Day.

One of the many reasons we need to take care of the Earth is for the animals. This next video shows you why it is so important that we take care of the Earth. It is something we should do every day.

Here are some great read-alouds for Earth Day.

Here is a great link to look at pictures of our Earth. This is from NASA showing pictures of Earth from above. https://www.space.com/earth-day-amazing-nasa-photos.html .

Here is some more information from the National Geographic Kids about Earth Day. https://kids.nationalgeographic.com/explore/celebrations/earth-day/

Funny Fill-In: Dreaming Green Story

Have fun creating this funny story. How do you celebrate Earth Day? Fill in the blanks to create your own silly story.

Here are some things you can do to help take care of the Earth.

Things you can do for Earth Day

Earth Day Activities for Kids

1. Pick up litter

Help clean up the planet this Earth Day by spending time picking up litter around your neighborhood, school or local park. Better yet, encourage your friends to pick their own areas to clean so you can spread the Earth Day goodness around.

2. Plant a tree.

Trees can help with soil erosion and contribute to dealing with carbon emissions, so make your mark—and give the next generation a greener future, too—by planting a few trees this Earth Day. The best part is, you can do this just about anywhere!

3. Make a call-to-action to share on social media.

Get your environmentally-conscious message out there and show your support for Earth Day 2020 by posting an educational video on your social media feed. Give your friends an #EarthDayChallenge to try, like picking up 15 pieces of litter, or simply share a few facts about global warming or rainforest preservation to help spread awareness.

4. Plan your own Earth Day science experiment.

This Earth Day, try out a cool science experiment to show how different disasters can affect our planet. For example, pour oil into a tub of water to see how difficult it is to clean up and why it’s so important that we keep oil spills from ruining our planet’s oceans.

5. Raise awareness about e-waste

E-waste is the disposed trash from our modern electronic devices, such as batteries or computer parts. With more and more digital devices being made every day, shedding light on the issue by posting about it on social media can be a great—and totally modern—way to celebrate Earth Day. Just be sure to share information about how to recycle electronic waste properly, too!

6. Build birdhouse or bird feeder.

Share your home with all of the Earth’s creatures by building a birdhouse or bird feeder out of recycled materials, such as an old cardboard box or milk jug, to help out your local avian population.

7. DIY a dry seed bomb.

Get your hands dirty with this fun and crafty activity that will help you get start on the planting season. To make, combine one part seeds, five parts compost, and 3 parts clay powder or clay soil (this helps it all stick together) in a bowl. Add a few drop of water at a time as you mix the whole thing together. Shape it into balls, then lay them out in the sun to dry. They’ll be ready to plant within a couple of days!

8. Build a terrarium.

Building a terrarium is a neat project to try any time of year, but especially on Earth Day! Not only is it a great way to bring a little bit of nature indoors, it makes for some cool bedroom decor, too.

9. Build a bug hotel.

Every animal on Earth has a special role to play in keeping our environment healthy—even the little critters! A bug hotel attracts beneficial insects that help control pests and gives them a place to nest during colder months, so they’ll stay close to your garden year-round. Make one by filling a small wood box with dried grasses, bark and pinecones.

10. Brainstorm energy-friendly ideas for around the house.

Cut back on energy waste and come up with a list of ideas that will make your home save energy this Earth Day, such as switching to LED bulbs, turning off the AC when you’re not home and other simple, energy-efficient ideas.

11. Go on a nature scavenger hunt.

Learn about local flora and fauna this Earth Day by searching for flowers, plants and trees native to your region around your neighborhood. Look for a regionalist list of native plants online to help guide your search!

12. Start a compost bin in your backyard.

Start a composting bin for your home this Earth Day. This eco-friendly way of disposing of veggie scraps and other bio-degradable waste products not only cuts back on the amount of trash you produce and send to landfills, but it creates a nutrient-rich compost mixture that can give your garden a boost!

13. Petition your local government to start a community garden.

Starting a community garden is a fantastic way to bring people together and help feed under-served communities. If you’re still practicing social distancing and can’t go door-to-door looking for signatures just yet, you can till get the paperwork going by researching how to petition your local government to carve out a plot of land for this specific purpose!

14. Craft a nature collage.

Celebrate Earth Day this year by making an all-natural art collage with things you’ve founding in nature, like leaves, pressed flowers, pieces of bark and other small items. Collect items while you’re out for a hike or exploring your local nature trail.

Here are some other ideas of things to do today!

1. Plant a garden or add some green to your space.

If you have access to a backyard (or even a window box), now is the perfect time to plant a garden. A small herb garden is easy to grow and maintain, and it provides fresh flavors for your future dishes. Plant flowers, vegetables, a tree — the possibilities are endless. Local gardening centers are open in states throughout the country, with some even offering no-contact pickup. You can even have plants delivered straight to your doorstep if there isn’t a garden center near you.

2. Take a walk (while social distancing) and discover native plants.

If you’re able to do so, take a walk around your neighborhood (while observing social distancing rules) and learn about the plants and animals that live in your area. You can use the Native Plant Finder website to search for plants in your zip code, or do a little research about the animals native to your region. Starting Tuesday, you can learn how to experience the magic of nature from home with Disney’s Wilderness Explorers at Home on the My Disney Experience app.

3. Learn about recyclables.

Sure, you recycle plastic bottles and aluminum cans, but there are probably a lot more things that you could be recycling. Take this time to refresh your knowledge of local recycling rules, and find out where you can recycle materials like textiles and electronic waste.

4. Shop sustainable brands online.

We all love shopping online, so make your next purchase easier on the environment by buying from a sustainable brand. Clothes made from recycled materials, package-free toiletries and household essentials, and more are available online.

5. Watch a documentary about the Earth.

Cure your cabin fever with a documentary that reminds you of the Earth's expansive beauty. On Netflix, check out Our Planet, a stunning docuseries hosted by David Attenborough that features beautiful footage and explores how climate change has impacted our world. Disney+ recently released Disneynature’s “Elephant” and “Dolphin Reef,” which come with a downloadable activity packet, perfect for kids learning from home.

6. Rethink food scraps.

Approximately 30 to 40 percent of the U.S. food supply becomes waste, according to the USDA. Take after chefs like Belmond Mount Nelson’s Rudi Liebenberg, who have reduced waste in their restaurants by finding resourceful ways to repurpose food items that would otherwise be thrown out. Get inspiration from the cocktail program at Showfish Bar at Gurney’s Star Island Resort & Marina in the Hamptons, which uses food scraps to flavor their drinks. Use leftover fruit and vegetables to make DIY infused spirits or syrups (think cucumber gin or strawberry tequila) for a refreshing at-home cocktail. Use sustainable liquors from Gray Whale Gin and Humboldt Distillery to benefit eco-conscious charities while you sip.

7. Look for stars.

Earth Day just happens to correspond with the peak of the Lyrid meteor shower, so there’s never been a better time to learn how to stargaze. If clear skies permit, get outside and look up — you might be rewarded with a shooting star or two.

8. Donate to charity.

While you might not be able to participate in group Earth Day activities like beach cleanups or festivals, you can still make a difference from home. Whether you want to protect endangered species or promote clean energy, there’s a charity for you. For this year’s Global Vision Awards, Travel + Leisure featured a number of initiatives, organizations, and governments making strides in conservation and sustainability.

9. Take a virtual field trip.

If you can’t get outside, bring the outdoors in with a virtual field trip: You can take a tour of a national park, explore the Great Barrier Reef, or even stroll through a botanic garden. Gurney’s Resorts also features digital lessons with the Cornell Cooperative Extension Marine Program as a part of their #GoneHomeWithGurneys initiative.

Things You Want To Learn

Well Skylee said that she would love to learn about Pandas. So let's take a look at Pandas.

Giant Panda Facts

  • The giant panda is native to China.

  • It has a black and white coat that features large black patches around its eyes.

  • Pandas are an endangered species. Population estimates vary but there may be around 2000 left living in the wild.

  • A giant panda cub weighs only around 150 grams (5 oz) at birth.

  • Adult males can weigh up to 150 kg (330 lb).

  • Giant panda have a lifespan of around 20 years in the wild.

  • Female pandas raise cubs on their own .

  • The diet of a panda is made up almost entirely of bamboo.

  • Giant pandas eat as much as 10 kg (22 lb) of bamboo a day.

  • Giant pandas are good climbers.

  • The scientific name for the giant panda is ‘ailuropoda melanoleuca’.

  • An animated movie from 2008 named ‘Kung Fu Panda’ features a giant panda called ‘Po’.

Facts about pandas

    • 1. Giant pandas (often referred to as simply “pandas”) are black and white bears. In the wild, they are found in thick bamboo forests, high up in the mountains of central China.

    • 2. These magnificent mammals are omnivores. But whilst pandas will occasionally eat small animals and fish, bamboo counts for 99 percent of their diet.

    • 3. Pandas are BIG eaters – every day they fill their tummies for up to 12 hours, shifting up to 12 kilograms of bamboo!

    • 4. The giant panda’s scientific name is Ailuropoda melanoleuca, which means “black and white cat-foot”.

    • 5. Giant pandas grow to between 1.2m and 1.5m, and weigh between 75kg and 135kg. Scientists aren’t sure how long pandas live in the wild, but in captivity they live to be around 30 years old.

    • 6. Baby pandas are born pink and measure about 15cm – that’s about the size of a pencil! They are also born blind and only open their eyes six to eight weeks after birth.

    • 7. It’s thought that these magnificent mammals are solitary animals, with males and females only coming together briefly to mate. Recent research, however, suggests that giant pandas occasionally meet outside of breeding season, and communicate with each other through scent marks and calls.

  • 8. Family time! Female pandas give birth to one or two cubs every two years. Cubs stay with their mothers for 18 months before venturing off on their own!

  • 9. Unlike most other bears, pandas do not hibernate. When winter approaches, they head lower down their mountain homes to warmer temperatures, where they continue to chomp away on bamboo!

  • 10. Sadly, these beautiful bears are endangered, and it’s estimated that only around 1,000 remain in the wild. That’s why we need to do all we can to protect them!

Here are a couple great websites to go visit to learn more about Pandas at the San Diego Zoo

Good Morning My Favorite Little People,

I hope you all had a good weekend. Did you do something fun? Let me know about it. As you can see I had to move all of the old Kids Corner Files to another page. There was so much stuff on there it stopped showing up. when I looked at what I wrote to you on Friday, it wasn't even showing up. So I moved all of the old Kids Corners to the drop down menu next to Kids Corner. If you want to look at any of the old ones from the past month just go up to my name, get to the drop down menu. Next to Kids Corner there is a down arrow, click on that and it will bring up the name Old Kids Corner March 19-April 17. This will let you see all the old things we have done this past month.....all the pictures, science ideas, drawing and art projects, and so much more. Can you believe that we have been doing on-line schooling for a whole month. Its crazy. Some of you I haven't seen for that whole month and it makes me sad. I miss you all. I'm so glad that most of you are able to get on Google Meets and I can at least see your sweet, beautiful smiles. Hopefully we can get together one more time and have a big party. Speaking of which, Sunday was Ledger's Birthday. We hope he had a wonderful Birthday. I will be checking in on him and posting more about his birthday later this week. I hope you all had a chance to send a video message to him. Okay, that is enough from me today. Let's see what we can learn about.

Things You Want To Learn

Today we are going to start off learning about Rocket Ships. This is something Scott wanted to know more about and we are glad to learn about some of the things that interest him. Remember if you want to learn about something you need to let me know either in Write to Me, Questions of the Day, or Daily Check In. I want to learn and explore the things you are interested in, so let me know what those things are. Now lets get learning about Rocket Ships. Thanks Scott for this idea.

What Is a Rocket?

The word "rocket" can mean different things. Most people think of a tall, thin, round vehicle. They think of a rocket that launches into space. "Rocket" can mean a type of engine. The word also can mean a vehicle that uses that engine.

How Does a Rocket Engine Work?

Like most engines, rockets burn fuel. Most rocket engines turn the fuel into hot gas. The engine pushes the gas out its back. The gas makes the rocket move forward.

A rocket is different from a jet engine. A jet engine needs air to work. A rocket engine doesn't need air. It carries with it everything it needs. A rocket engine works in space, where there is no air.

There are two main types of rocket engines. Some rockets use liquid fuel. The main engines on the space shuttle orbiter use liquid fuel. The Russian Soyuz uses liquid fuels. Other rockets use solid fuels. On the side of the space shuttle are two white solid rocket boosters. They use solid fuels. Fireworks and model rockets also fly using solid fuels.

Why Does a Rocket Work?

In space, an engine has nothing to push against. So how do rockets move there? Rockets work by a scientific rule called Newton's third law of motion. English scientist Sir Isaac Newton listed three Laws of Motion. He did this more than 300 years ago. His third law says that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. The rocket pushes on its exhaust. The exhaust pushes the rocket, too. The rocket pushes the exhaust backward. The exhaust makes the rocket move forward.

This rule can be seen on Earth. Imagine a person standing on a skateboard. Imagine that person throwing a bowling ball. The ball will go forward. The person on the skateboard will move, too. The person will move backward. Because the person is heavier, the bowling ball will move farther.

When Were Rockets Invented?

The first rockets we know about were used in China in the 1200s. These solid rockets were used for fireworks. Armies also used them in wars. In the next 700 years, people made bigger and better solid rockets. Many of these were used for wars too. In 1969, the United States launched the first men to land on the moon using a Saturn V rocket.

How Does NASA Use Rockets?

Early NASA missions used rockets built by the military. Alan Shepard was the first American in space. He flew on the U.S. Army's Redstone rocket. John Glenn was the first American in orbit. He flew on an Atlas rocket. NASA's Gemini missions used the Titan II rocket. The first rockets NASA built to launch astronauts were the Saturn I, the Saturn IB and the Saturn V. These rockets were used for the Apollo missions. The Apollo missions sent men to the moon. A Saturn V also launched the Skylab space station. The space shuttle uses rocket engines.

NASA uses rockets to launch satellites. It also uses rockets to send probes to other worlds. These rockets include the Atlas V, the Delta II, the Pegasus and Taurus. NASA uses smaller "sounding rockets" for scientific research. These rockets go up and come back down. They do not fly into orbit.

How Will NASA Use Rockets in the Future?

New rockets are being developed today. They will launch astronauts on future missions.

The new rockets will not look like the space shuttle. These rockets will look more like earlier ones. They will be tall and round and thin. These rockets will take astronauts into space. They will take supplies to the International Space Station. NASA also is working on a powerful new rocket called a heavy lift vehicle. This rocket will be able to take big loads into space.

Together, these new rockets will make it possible to explore other worlds. Someday they may send humans to Mars.

Robert Goddard built the first liquid-fuel rocket.

Have you noticed what happens if you let the air out of a balloon? The air goes one way and the balloon moves in the opposite direction. Rockets work in much the same way. Exhaust gases coming out of the engine nozzle at high speed push the rocket forward.

Most modern launchers, such as Europe’s Ariane 5, are very complicated and weigh hundreds of tonnes at liftoff. Most of this weight is fuel, such as liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen.

Rockets need so much fuel in order to overcome Earth’s gravity. Only when they reach a speed of 28 000 km/h are they travelling fast enough to enter orbit.

Most rockets are made up of two or three stages. When a stage has used up all of its fuel, it is separated to get rid of the dead weight. It then falls back (usually into the ocean and far from populated areas) or burns up in the atmosphere.

Large launchers often get an extra boost from rockets strapped onto the first stage. These may use solid or liquid fuel. They, too, are usually thrown away.

A rocket may be a missile, spacecraft, aircraft or other vehicle which is pushed by a rocket engine. Some rockets are manned (e.g. Saturn V). Other rockets, for example missiles, are unmanned. ("Manned" means that a person is in it; "unmanned" means that the machine can go without a person.)

Most rockets can be launched from the ground because exhaust thrust from the engine is bigger than the weight of the vehicle on Earth. Some are used to bring satellites into orbit. Some rockets such as ion thrusters are too weak and heavy to lift themselves. They work after other rockets bring them to outer space.

The rocket was invented by the Chinese while using gunpowder. The first rockets were shaped like arrows and were not very fast. Most rockets still work by fire. The fire makes hot exhaust gases that expand and shoot out the back. This makes the rocket go forward.

Most rockets still use solid fuel to make the fire. The biggest ones use liquid fuel because it makes a hotter fire so the rocket is more powerful. However, handling the liquid fuel safely is difficult and expensive.

Rockets are also used for fireworks and weapons and to control moves in outer space.

Manned rockets, like other manned flying machines, are designed to limit their acceleration and vibration to protect the crew. Unmanned rockets however are not bound by the limits of humans.

Some rockets go faster than the speed of sound (Mach 1) and may reach speeds of up to 30'000 km/hr (Mach 25) when in orbit.

Yuri Gagarin was a Soviet cosmonaut who, on 12 April 1961, became the first human to journey into outer space. He was in a rocket launched by the Soviet Union.

Here is a video that tells you how rockets work.

Now lets look at a rocket launch.

Watch the next video to learn how they build a rocket.
