Reading/Word Work Time

Good Morning and Happy Friday Everyone,

I hope you are all doing okay and you have a fantastic weekend. I miss you all and was so glad to see some of you in the google meets. I know it has been a little bit different this week and it seems like a little bit more work but trust me, it will start getting to be less and less. After today we only have 14 more days of school. We have a lot to get done in that amount of time so we better get to it.

Let's get started correcting your Mountain Language so we can finish up your work week and you can start enjoying the weekend.

Mountain Language Correcting

  1. The beginning sound is P for Pig or if you did Hog I would accept an H.

  1. The ending sound is g.

  2. The missing vowel sound is e.

  3. The missing vowel sound is a.

  4. The missing blend is gr (green).

  5. The missing chunk is ch (stretch).

  6. The word that has the same vowel sound is bell.

  7. Draw a picture of a belt and write the word belt.

  8. The two words that make up doghouse is dog and house. You should have drawn pictures of both.

  9. The two words that make up the contraction we've is we have.

  10. There are 2 syllables in funny.

  11. Pain is the Root word so ful is what you write down and it is a suffix because it is after the root word.

  12. The word that means the same thing as Bird is the word Fowl.

  13. The opposite of open is close.

  14. The word that is not spelled correctly is howse... it should be spelled house.

  15. The words in ABC order should be glad, goat, grass.

  16. The word that comes in between the two guide words goat and got is the word good.

  17. Baby is the Subject (NOUN) and cried is the Action Word (Verb).

  18. To write the sentence correctly you would put quotation marks or bunny ears at the start of the sentence, then capitalize the W in We. Then capitalize the I in Independence and the D in Day because it is a holiday. Then put a period after Day or you could put an exclamation point if you said it with excitement. It should read We saw the fireworks on Independence Day.

  19. Jump is the word that does not belong. If you put something else, explain why to your parents. If it makes sense they can count it as correct.

  20. Give yourself credit if you named things shaped like triangles.

Story Packet

Okay we are going to finish up the story packet. Now you will have done one so you know what to expect the next couple of weeks. This is what is replacing our Wonders. We are going to do the last page in the packet and it looks like this.

On the first part of this page you are going to write down who said it. You are going to look at the sentence and decide if that was something Eagle said, Frog said, or Tortoise. If you need help, go read or look through the story again and that should give you the answers. Look at #1. The sentence says, "Eagle is laughing at you," said _____________. Who was it that said that? If I look on the first page of the story I can see those exact same words and it says, "Frog went to Tortoise's house and he said, "Eagle is laughing at you..." So we know that the answer would be frog. You would write Frog on the line. On #2 is says, "Ha! I've eaten Tortoise's food but he can't eat mine," said _______________. Well I have a pretty good guess who said it but I want to double check so that I make sure I'm getting it right. On the first page it talks about how Eagle was talking to himself and he said "Ha! I've eaten Tortoise's food many times. But he can't reach my home to eat mine." So I was right, it was the Eagle who said that but now I know for sure so I will write Eagle on the line. Now you try and do the rest. Make sure that you go back and check the story so you know for sure if you are right.

Spelling Test

Okay now get ready for your spelling test Remember this week you will have 33 words. Don't let that scare you. Like I said before, it is no different than doing your regular spelling and two sentences. You will do great. These are words you already know. Have your parents send me your score.

Lexia

I want to announce that both Megan and Payton are now on level 13!!! Way to go you two!!! That is so awesome and I am so proud of you working so hard and not giving up. I knew you could do it!!! A round of applause for Megan and Payton. We now only have 7 people that are still working towards the goal of reaching level 13. Max did 29 units this week and Bentley did 41 units. Way to go! Keep it up and you will be on level 13 in no time. Scott is on level 12 and almost to 13. You are doing awesome Scott. Keep it up and before you know it you will be there you are doing amazing. Some others of you are working hard too! Keep going everybody, don't give up. You can get there if you keep doing a little every day. Thank you to those who are level 13 and above but are still getting on to do Lexia. This helps us keep our free licenses for next year. You guys are all awesome and I am so proud of you. Our class has done an amazing job on Lexia. I'm so glad so many of you decided to make it your goal and that you worked hard to get there. You can do anything!!! For those who need to get on, here is the link to Lexia. https://www.lexiacore5.com/

If you have all of your Lexia minutes and units, then could work on the little plant unit that was in your packet. Plants are fun to learn about and these pages are just for fun. You don't have to do them. Let's watch a couple of videos on plants. This first video will help you do this page.

Hopefully the next video will help you with the back of this page. You need to put the sentences in the correct order. What do you do first when you start to plant a garden? The first thing you would do is decided to plant a garden, wouldn't you? So the first sentence would be John & Sally decided to plant a garden. You are going to put #1 next to that sentence and then you will rewrite it on the first line. What would the next thing be that you do? You would want to get the soil ready wouldn't you? So you would put a #2 next to the sentence that says they prepared the soil and pulled all of the weeds. Then you would rewrite that on the second line. Finish figuring out what happens next. Put the number in the box and rewrite the sentence on that line. Continue until you have put the story in the right order.

On this paper you are supposed to read the topic sentence and then write supporting details from what you can see in the pictures. So on the first side the topic sentence is Planting and tending to a garden can be a lot of work. What are some of the things you can see them doing in the picture that would prove that a garden can be a lot of work. Well one thing is that you have to get the soil ready and dig a hole before you can plant the seeds. What are some other things you can see.

On this side you will do the same thing except the topic sentence on this side is There are so many fun things to do in Spring. What are some supporting details that you can write about? What are some things they show in the picture that are some fun things to do in Spring. Don't forget to write complete sentences.

On this page you are going to write some details to support the main idea, just like in the previous page. The main idea is that there are many ways to help the environment. What ways do the pictures tell you are ways to help the environment. In the first picture it is recycling. So you could write a sentence that says something like, Recycling is one way to help the environment. It keeps the waste down in the city dumps which is good for the Earth. We can also use recycled products again so that we don't have to use the Earth's resources. Like when they make paper out of recycled materials and then we don't have to cut down so many trees. Thing of different ideas that you can come up for each picture. Help support that Main Idea.

GO MATH BOOK

CHAPTER 11

Okay, today's Number of the Day would be #164. Only 14 more days of school left after today!!! Do #164 in your Number of the Day Book. Show your parents how you do it.

Use your word problem book and do the Friday problem of the day for the week that you have been working on.

We just finished up our Chapter 10 on Data and we will be doing the Data Test on Monday. Today I wanted you to take the Fraction Test. I know that it was about two weeks ago that you learned about fractions so I would like to do a little review before you take the test.

Remember that fractions are talking about parts of a whole. You have 6 pieces of pie in the whole pie but your older brother came in and ate two pieces of the pie. What is the fraction of pie that is left. Since there are 6 pieces in a whole pie, that would be our denominator. This number 6 would be on the bottom of the fraction. Then there would be a line above. The top number is how many pieces of the pie are left unless it asked us what fraction was eaten. Remember this is called the numerator. How many pieces of the whole pie is left. Well since there were 6 pieces and your brother ate two I could subtract 2 from 6 or 6-2=? I know that it is 4. So my bottom number would be 6 and my top number would be for. 4 out of the 6 pieces of pie are left or four/sixths are left. Let's watch these two video and see if it helps you remember what a fraction is.

Okay, I hope that brought back some memories. There are a couple of things I wanted to review because I'm not sure that I explained it enough and I don't think our book covered it very well. When they tell you to shade in 1/3 of the picture, you would use your pencil and color in 1 out of the 3 parts that are on that shape. It doesn't matter which one you color in, as long as it is 1 out of the 3 parts. This middle video touched on something else that I wanted to talk to you about and that is if you have 5 balls and 1 is a basketball, what fraction of the balls is the basketball? Well we have 1 out of the 5 balls is a basketball so the fraction would be 1/5 or one fifth. If you 6 suckers and 4 of them are red and 2 are blue, what fraction of the suckers are red........4 out of the 6 suckers are red so 4/6 or four/sixths are red. Also please remember if the parts are not all the same size or equal, then the shape is not a fraction. If something is divided into two parts, it is called halves. If something is divided into three parts it is called thirds, and if something is divided into four parts it is called fourth. Remember the bottom number (the denominator) is how many there are in the whole thing. The top number (the numerator) is how many are shaded in or how many are left. Good luck. I hope this helps you with the fraction test. This is what it looks like and you should have it in your packet. Hopefully after this you would have taken both Chapter 11 Test-The Shape Test and the Fraction Test. Do your best and have your parents get me your score.

Okay, we are almost done with Math. I am going to have you do the last page of math in your packet. This is what it looks like.

On this side of the paper you are going to roll 3 dice and make a 3-digit number. Write that number on the first line. You won't do anything in the box yet. Roll the dice again and make another 3-digit number. Write it on the next line. Now in the box you are going to write the greater than > sign, the less than < sign, or the equal = sign. For example, lets say I rolled a 5, a 2, and an 8 on my dice. I could make the number 528. I would write this on the first line. Then let's say I rolled a 2, a 9, and a 6. I could make the number 296. I would write that on the second line. So I would have 528 and 296. Since 528 is more that 296, I would use the greater than sign in the box. My first line would look like this 528 > 296. Then I would start over on the next line and roll my 3 dice again to get a new 3-digit number. Do this page and then turn it over to finish the page.

On this side you are going to roll one die and get a number. You will write it on the first line. Then you will roll again and get a second number and write it down. Then you will roll again and get a third number and write it down. Come of these problems have 3 addends and some have 4 and some even have 5. Remember that an addend is a number that you add. If there are 4 blanks with plus signs between them you will fill in 4 numbers. If there are 5 blanks with plus signs between them you will fill in 5 numbers. But when you get to the equal sign (=) you are finding the sum. That last blank will be the total or the sum of all then numbers on that line added up. For example, if I roll a 8, a 6, a 9, and a 4. I would write down 8 + 6 + 9 + 4 =? Those would be my 4 addends and then I would add them to get my sum. Remember that if I can find numbers that equal ten sometimes it is easier to add if I add them first so I am going to add 6 + 4 = 10. Then I have to add 8 + 9 =?. I know if I take one away from the 8 and add it to the 9 I would have 7 + 10 and that is easier to add than 8 + 9 but they equal the same thing. 7 + 10 = 17 so 8 + 9 must equal 17. But I'm still not done, now I have to add that 10 that I got from the 6 + 4, to the 17 I got from the 8 + 9. so 10 + 17 = 27. I hope that didn't confuse you and you remember how we add 3, 4, and 5 addend problems. Good luck and have fun. Once you are done with the math paper, have your parents check it and then get on line for Specialty.

Since today is Friday, Specialty is Computers. Use the computer link and go to Week 7 to see what they have planned for you today!

Animal Reports

Yesterday you worked on your Habitat Paper. You should have gotten information about where your animal lives, what type of predators they have, and how do they keep themselves safe from the predators. Today we are going to work on the page that has you finding out about what kinds of food does your animal eat. Get out your animal packet and turn to this page, #4 Food.

Is your animal an Herbivore? Do they eat plants? Is it a Carnivore? Do they eat meat? Or is your animal a Omnivore? Do they eat both? What exactly does your animal eat. How does it get its food? How do they eat their food? Do they swallow it whole like a snake? Give as much detail as possible. Draw the food on the back of your page.

Here is a video that tells you about Herbivores, Carnivores, and an Omnivore is.

Here are some animals that are Herbivores.

Here are some animals that are Carnivores.

Here are some animals that are Omnivores.

You will need to research your animal and find the answers to the questions on your paper. When you are done you can work on a gift for your mom or your day is done. Check with your parents to see what they would like you to do next.

MOM'S NEED TO GO RELAX!!! THIS IS OFF LIMITS TO MOM'S UNTIL SUNDAY

Okay, one of our last Mother's Day Gifts is the flower Bouquet. You will probably need some help for this one. For this you will need to cut out 5 flowers and five of the centers that are on the white paper and they have different things that you fill out. I guess we sent ten flowers home and two sets of the white center pieces. Finish writing in the things about your mom. Cut them out. They go into the center of the flowers.

You will need to cut out two leaves for each flower and the plain green paper is for you to use to make stems for the flowers. Cut this green paper into 5 thin strips. You will glue the stems inside the vase. There is an instruction paper that shows you how to put together the vase that says Happy Mother's Day.

When you are finished your bouquet is going to look something like this.

Good luck. I hope you had a good time making your Mother's Day Gifts. Have a great weekend!!!
