I hope to see you all there. For now lets get started on todays lesson.

Mountain Language #11-15

You should have be done with #1-10 already, If you haven't done those, you can get caught up now. You can use the Mountain Language paper from last week if you still have it. The Mountain Language Poster is in the top corner of the screen!

Mini Lesson on Antonyms

Okay, today we are going to go over antonyms. We have talked about synonyms and antonyms before. We are just going to focus on antonyms today. Remember that synonyms is a word that means the same thing like little and tiny. Antonyms mean the opposite of the word. Like up and down. Let's watch this video on Antonyms.

Here is a song that will help you remember that Antonyms are Opposites.

Hopefully you remember when we have talked about antonyms before. We have had a lot of examples given to us when we have been reading so I'm sure you will be able to do this worksheet without any problems. Get the worksheet out of the packet. They want you to read the clues at the bottom of the page and write the opposite or antonym for that word. Then you are going to find and circle the word you wrote down, in the word search. If you can't find the word you may want to double check and make sure you put down a correct antonym or maybe think of another antonym you can use for that word. When you are done, turn over the paper to do the other side. I will help you do the first couple. Look at #1. The opposite of hot would be.....COLD. You would right cold on the line and find it in the word search. You can write down all the answers and then search for them or you can do it one at a time. Whichever is easiest for you. Now let's do #2. The opposite of early would be.....LATE. So write late down on the line and try and find it in the word search. I'm sure you will do great at this. When you are done turn the paper over.

On this side you are going to create your own word search. put the words in different places on the grid and then fill in the empty boxes with letters. Remember you can put these words going up and down, diagonal, across from left to right, or even backwards. You can have some of the word use one of the same letters. For example you can write the word earth across the grid and have the "t" in plant be the "t" that is in Earth. Have your parents help you and then have a friend or a sibling try and find all the words. Don't forget to put all the words in ABC Order at the bottom of the page. The first word would be air. Remember if the first letter is the same, you go to the next letter and see which letter comes first in the alphabet. Have fun with making your word search. Let me know how it turns out and if you tricked anybody.

Story Packet

On this page of the Story Packet at the top, you are going to add the letters eat to the letters that are already there to make a word. I don't want you to just put the letters eat on the line, I want you to write the word that those things together make. Let's look at the first one. The letter that is there is the letter b. I want you to add eat to it and you would now have the word beat. Write beat on the line. I will help you with one more. The next letter is the letter m. I want you to add m and eat together to form the word meat and write the word meat on the line. Now you are going to take those words that you just made and you are going to write them with your definition. For example......#2 says, to pound on something. When you pound on something, like a drum, you beat it. So you would put the word beat on the line across from #2. I'm sure you will do great with this.

On the bottom part of this page they want you to circle the correct form of the word to make the sentences correct. You need to remember that with contractions those are two words put together, replacing some of the letters with an apostrophe, and making one word. So when you read these sentences, look at the contraction and instead of saying the contraction to yourself when reading the sentence, try using both words in the sentence and see if it sounds correct. For example, lets look at #1 and #2. The words that we get to pick from is your and you're. The two words that make up the contraction you're are the words you and are. So when I read sentence #1 and #2, I am going to read it to myself and replace the blank with the words you and are. Then I am going to see which sentence sounds correct. The first sentence says, "What is _______ favorite food?" If I replace the blank with you are, the sentence would now say, "What is you are favorite food?" Does that sound right to you? Let's try sentence #2. The sentence says, "_____________ invited to my party." If I replace the blank with you are the sentence would now say, "You are invited to my party." Which one sounds correct or better. I would say that putting "You are" in the second sentence sound much better than when it was in the first sentence so I am going to circle your for the first sentence and circle you are for the second sentence. See if you can do it for sentences #3 and #4. The contraction is it's and the words that make that contraction is "it is." Try putting "it is" in both blanks and decide which one it sounds the best in or makes more sense. Circle it for the sentence it sounds the best in and circle the other its for the other sentence. Try doing #5 and #6 on your own.

When you are done, don't forget to read for 20-30 minutes or you can do it during Specialty for Library. Reading is fun and helps you with so many things. Don't forget to keep reading this Summer!!! When you are done, you might want to take a break because it would be recess time. Ask you parents if that's okay and then come do some Math with me!!!

Math Block

Don't forget to come back to do the writing block.

Writing Block

Sharks

Today we want to compare Sharks to Fish and figure out somethings that are the same and somethings that are different. Get out your graphic organizer page that looks like this.

In the circle that says "Shark", you are going to write things that only sharks have or do that fish don't do. In the circle that says "Fish", you are going to write things that only fish have or do that sharks don't do. In the middle, where the two circles meet, you are going to write things that sharks and fish have in common or that are the same. Can you think of some things to go in each of the circles and in the middle, just off the top of your head? Write those in there. Here is some information that might help you. Do your best to get as much information as you can into the venn diagram. You could use this information if you decide to write the paper on sharks.

Sharks are fish but fish are not sharks. How is a shark different from and alike other kinds of fish?

  • Like other fish, sharks have gills. Gills are how fish breathe. Fish get oxygen from the water using gills. Water needs to move over the gills so that sharks and fish get enough oxygen. To keep the water moving, most sharks need to swim in water that has a very strong current. Sharks and fishes, however, are very closely related. In fact, sharks are a type of fish. Fishes are defined as any group of cold-blooded animals that live their whole lives in the ocean and that have a backbone, fins, and gills.

  • Most other fish have skeletons made of bone. A shark's skeleton is made of cartilage, a type of strong but flexible tissue. Fish are divided into two groups based on their skeleton, which is why sharks are technically fish, though not what we traditionally think of when we image a fish.

  • Most other fish are covered in smooth, flat scales. A shark is covered in sharp, toothlike scales called denticles.

  • Most other fish have just one gill slit—an organ for breathing—on each side of the body. A shark has five, six, or even seven gill slits on each side. Most other fish have flaps over their gills. Sharks do not. Bony fish often possess a protective bony plate to protect their gills, while the gills of sharks are exposed and more vulnerable.

  • Both bony fish and sharks replace their teeth for their entire life. Sharks also have multiple rows of teeth, while most fish only have one. Additionally, while fish only replace teeth that have been lost, sharks teeth are constantly dropping out and being replaced by new ones, like a conveyer belt. This leads to some sharks losing tens of thousands of teeth in their lifetime.

  • Bony fish have a specialized body organ called a swim bladder that provides buoyancy and allows them to regulate their depth in the water. Instead of a swim bladder, sharks have very large livers.

Once you have finished this paper you can color the following paper if you would like and notice all the differences between the different kinds of sharks. Keep these papers to put with your Shark writing on Friday. You are done with today. Have a great day and don't forget about Bingo at 10:30.
