Reading/Word Work Time

Happy Monday Morning All My Little Munchkins,

I hope you had a great Spring Break and you enjoyed your time off of schoolwork......but here we are again....I hope you are ready to get busy!!! You know the drill, first lets get started with

Mountain Language #1-5

You should have one of these papers in your packet. You can use the one from last week if you still have it. The Mountain Language Poster is in the top corner of the screen!

Vocabulary Words

Next we are going to work on our Vocabulary Words. I know how much you love these. We only have this week and two more weeks and we will be done with the Wonders Vocabulary Words. Watch the video below and remember that you will be doing the Vocabulary Worksheet after this. Don't forget to say the word three times to help you remember it.

Now wasn't that fun. Since I forgot to print out these worksheets, you will have to have your parents print one out or you can copy the whole sentence on a piece of paper and put in the correct vocabulary word as you write.

Great Job. Now it's on to the Interactive Story Cards. This week we are learning about how we can protect the Earth. It will be Earth Day on April 22nd. That is the day that people celebrate the Earth and make extra effort to do something good like plant a tree or clean up garbage. We should always be doing things to protect our Earth. Listen to this story about how a class had an assignment to make a poster about how to protect the Earth. One girl in the class has a hard time figuring out what she could do to protect the Earth. Click the link below to see what she does....

How did you like it? I think she came up with a great idea for a picture. Did you think so too? We need to remember to take care of the Earth for our animals too. Maybe later today during writing time you could write about something you would like to do to help the Earth and draw a picture too. Don't forget to send a picture of it to me as well and we can share it with the class. For now let's take a look at this weeks spelling words.

Spelling Words

We are doing words that have different ways to make the short a sound. In this list we have the vowel diagraphs a, aw, au, al, augh, ough, and then we have five Hight Frequency Words. Remember to go over your spelling words a couple of times this week so that you are ready for the Spelling Test on Friday.

Now that you have had a chance to look at them, don't forget to do the first section of your trifold that is in your packet. You will be doing the section marked Spelling Phonics. Get out your crayons or colored pencils. Color in the words with the colored pencil or crayon that follow the spelling pattern. The bottom crayon is blue and the spelling pattern is augh . Don't forget to color the words that don't follow any patter the color yellow for other.

Reading Time

Okay everyone, you did the morning word work. Way to go. Now its time to read for 20 to 30 minutes. Find a nice quiet spot, your favorite book, and maybe a stuffed animal or two and Read, Read, Read!!! If it is okay with your parents you can go to our reading page and do one of the reading programs there instead but make sure you are reading the stories too. Here is the link to the Second Grade Reading Page. This has links to Lexia, Scholastic, Storyline Online, and Raz-Kids as well as some other stories Ms. Halladay thought you might enjoy.

CHAPTER 11

Welcome back students!! I hope you got to have a little break. If we were at school you would be doing your Number Of The Day Book and your Word Problem Book. Today would be #145. Only 33 more days of school!!! I haven't sent those books home yet but I have told your parents they can come and get them this week if they would like. If you've got a piece of paper you can do #145 on that. Show your parents how you do it. Don't forget to write include the following information.... (example is for #122) Remember you need to do it for #145.

Standard Form (Number Way) Picture Form Word Form Expanded Form

122 D II : One Hundred Twenty Two 100 + 20 + 2

(H) undreds/ (T) ens/ (O) nes Even or Odd 132 Ten More 222 One Hundred More

1 Hundred 2 Tens 2 Ones Even 112 Ten Less 22 One Hundred Less

Write 4 math problems that equal the number of the day...Examples: 11+11=22, 24-2=22, 55-33=22, 20+2=22

Don't forget to do your number of the day for #145. Here is a word problem that you can figure out as well....

114 birds were sitting in a tree. 21 more birds flew up to the tree. How many birds were there altogether in the tree?

Now get out your GO Math Book. If you have not finished Chapter 6 and taken the final Math Test that was on the blue paper in the packet from before Spring Break, I want you to finish Chapter 6 and take that test before you go on to Chapter 11. We are starting on Chapter 11 in the Go Math Book it is page 505. It should look like the pages below. I want you to read and do pages 505-507 and you can play the game on page 508. Just do your best. Remember we are trying to find out what you know. Have your Parents help you if you need help.

After you have finished these pages, I want you to do the next four math pages 509-512. I know it seems like a lot but these are easy pages. This will be section 11.1 in your Go Math Book. I will help guide you with the first two pages and the next two you will be on your own, just like in class. The first two pages look like this....

On this page you need to draw a picture of an object that is the same shape. An example for the top box would be if you drew a picture of a Kleenex Box because it has that same shape. The bottom box I could draw a picture of a soup can because a can of soup has that same shape. I want you to come up with your own ideas of what to draw.

Here is a video for you to watch so you can learn a little about 3-D shapes before you go on to do the next page. Enjoy it!!!

On this page, notice different shapes in Model and Draw. These are three dimensional or 3-D shapes. It gives you an idea of what shape something has if you could see through it. Notice the name cube in the top box. The 2-D name you learned in first grade. It is a square. Think of the 2-D names for each object that you might have learned already and its 3-D name. A cube has the same shape as a square, a rectangular prism has the same shape as a rectangle, a sphere is the same shape as a circle. The last two pictures, cylinder and cone are 3-D shapes but a cylinder kind of looks like a rectangle with a rounded bottom and top, and a cone looks like a triangle with a rounded bottom. In Model and Draw they want you to choose the picture that is the shape of a cube.....Remember a cube has the same shape as a square. Circle the correct picture....They helped you with this one. You should have circled the block.

Now do #1 & #2. Circle all the objects in #1 that are the same shape as a Sphere. Did you circle the Basketball? In #2, circle all the objects that are the same shape as the cube. Did you circle the die? Good Job, now I want you to do the next two pages (Pages 511 & 512) on your own.

Read the instructions on this page and do the work yourself.

Follow the instructions on the page. For the Hot Problem, think about a cube looks like or look at #10. How many flat surfaces or squares would it take to make a cube? Finish the Math pages and have your parents check them.

Okay, we are almost done with Math. Ask you parents if they want you to do the pages in the Math homework book for extra practice. It would be page 239 in your practice book and it looks like this

Here is a little video about it if you need help.

Okay, one last thing I have included to help you remember the shapes is a couple of shape songs. I hope you like them. When you are done watch, ask your parents if you can take a little break or get on ST Math or Big Brains for a little while. Since we can't do Math Workshop, you can have fun doing Math another way. Have fun! Remember you still aren't done for the day yet, we have writing coming up next and we will be learning about Fairy Tales!!! See you back here soon!

Writing Block

Fractured Fairy Tales

Welcome back. I hope you had a good time in Math today. Now lets take a look at writing. I hope you have finished up your biographies and you are getting excited about writing a Fractured Fairy Tale. This week we are going to take a look at Fairy Tales and learn what Fairy Tales are. I want you to start brainstorming about your favorite Fairy Tale. Think about who the characters are. Is there something you would change about the story? How would you make it better? What is the problem be for the main character? Can you think of a better problem? Or another problem the main character could have? How do they solve the problem? Would you solve it that way? Who else would be in the story? Would you add different people? Where did it take place? Would you have it take place somewhere else. All of these things could change a Fairy Tale and that is what a Fractured Fairy Tale is. You take a Fairy Tale and you change it or fracture it. A fracture is a break. We are going to take your favorite Fairy Tale and break it a little by changing up some of the things that happen. For today we are just going to learn a little bit about what a Fairy Tale is and take a look at a couple of Fairy Tales. When you are listening to the Fairy Tales, think about what you would change to make it different or better in your mind. Write down some notes as you listen to each Fairy Tale on how you would change it. Lets first take a look at what makes something a Fairy Tale. Watch this video and see if you can pick out some characteristics that let you know some of these movie clips are Fairy Tales.

Did you notice in Cinderella they were showing Magic, in Snow White, it was the Evil Queen, in Beauty and the Beast the Beast is the Villan and has human characteristics or traits? The Candlestick, Tea Pot, and Dresser also act like they are human, these would be talking objects. Theses are some of the signs that these movies are Fairy Tales. Lets take a closer look at what a Fairy Tale is.

Here are somethings that are usually found in a Fairy Tale.

Think about all the Fairy Tales you have read or seen. Can you identify some of these things in those stories? Here's a Fairy Tale for you. Tell me what elements of a Fairy Tale does this movie clip have?

So today you learned about what a Fairy Tale is. A Fairy Tale is a type of Folktale that is make believe and takes place in a fantasy world. Fairy Tales are usually written for children and they start with "Once upon a time.... and end with ".....and they lived happily ever after.

You also learned about what some of the characteristics or elements of a Fairy Tale were. Can you name a few? Have you come up with ideas about what you are going to do for your Fractured Fairy Tale? You can start writing some of your ideas down now and see if you can pick out what the characteristics or elements are in the story you are thinking of. Use the list of Fairy Tale Elements above and see how many of those things you can answer. For example....If I were to take the story Beauty and the Beast and I looked at that list I would see that

Magic Spells that was used is that the prince was turned into a Beast.

Animals with Human Characteristics would be the Beast.

Talking objects would be the furniture.

Evil Villain would be the Beast

At least one Kind Character would be Lumiere and Mrs. Potts

I could keep going but I know I have a good Fairy Tale because it has so many of the elements of a Fairy Tale. The more elements it has, the better story it is.

That is all the writing we are going to do for today. Keep your thinking brains on and be ready for tomorrow when we talk about what makes a good plot in a Fairy Tale.

Make sure to check with your parents and see if they would like you to do any more school work for today. I think you have done a great job. If there is nothing else they want you to do feel free to go to our class kids corner and see what great things we have happening there this week.
