Our Curriculum

This year we have implemented the Ark Maths Mastery curriculum.  The curriculum is a very practical and talk based curriculum allowing the children to be able to apply the skills that they have learnt to problem solving questions.  The Ark Maths Mastery curriculum  provides high quality lessons which are carefully sequenced to ensure progression from EYFS to KS1 to KS2.

All year groups from EYFS to Y6 follow the Ark Maths Mastery curriculum.

Why do we teach Maths?

At Shafton Primary Academy, we see Maths as a skill that we use on a daily basis and is an essential part of our everyday lives.  Therefore, Mathematics forms an important part of our broad and balanced curriculum where we endeavour to ensure that children develop an enjoyment, enthusiasm for maths that will stay with them throughout their lives.  Our aim is to develop a positive culture of deep understanding, confidence and competence in maths that produces strong, secure learning. As a school, we recognise that the key to unlocking the potential in our children is through the development of basic mathematical skills and the understanding of mathematical concepts. We therefore place great emphasis on the use of concrete resources and pictorial representations at all ages, to enable children to fully understand the concepts and principals, when presented with abstract calculations and questions. Our maths curriculum is progressive; at KS2 it is designed to develop competencies to equip pupils for KS3 where they will build on KS2, make connections and solve increasingly sophisticated problems.

Maths Handbook 📖

Here is the Maths handbook for 2023-24.  Please have a read of it as it details how we teach Maths at Shafton Primary Academy.

Curriculum Overview 2023-24

We follow the curriculum overviews from Ark Maths Mastery, as the units are set out to ensure progression throughout the year.

Teachers will use their autonomy for if they need longer working on a unit to ensure that children understand the concepts being taught.

Star Words ⭐

All the children from EYFS to Y6 are taught 'Star words' or key vocabulary words.  Every class has the 'Star words' displayed and the words that are relevant for the unit they are learning are recapped at the beginning of each lesson.  Children are expected to use their star words when they are completing talk tasks and reasoning tasks.

Here is a vocabulary list so you can see what words your child is expected to use in their year group.

Representing in Maths

Here are some photos of the children using equipment for representation.
