Design Technology

DT Lead:  Mrs S Stephenson

Our Curriculum

At Shafton Primary Academy, we follow the Kapow scheme of work for Design Technology.  Design and technology is the part of the curriculum where pupils learn to design, make and evaluate functional products or systems in terms of their fitness for purpose. The children learn through practical and technological activities where they get to design and make products.  DT if a fun subject where the children can draw upon other curriculum areas such as Maths to support their learning.

Kapow follows the National Curriculum very closely.  The National Curriculum organises the D&T attainment targets under five subheadings/ strands:

Cooking and nutrition is separate as the children focus on specific principles, skills and techniques in food, including where food comes from, diet and seasonality.

The children address the National Curriculum strands through these key areas:

DT Yearly Overview

DT is taught in blocks.  The Kapow DT this year will be covered in Summer 1 term.  Here is a copy of the DT overview and how long each Kapow topic for each year group has been given to research, design, make and evaluate that product.  DT is not solely to be taught in Summer 1, there is scope in the other blocks e.g. History / Geography to complete other non-Kapow DT projects and these are suggestions on the overview.
