Welcome to Year 1

Our teacher is Mrs Bray and our teaching assistants are Miss Whitehead and Mrs Dunn.

Welcome to the Year 1 class page please take a look at what we are learning throughout the year.

PHONICS AND READING

Children use their phonics knowledge when they are reading and writing. This approach has been shown to provide a quick and efficient way for most young children to learn  to read words on the page fluently and accurately. We want children to develop this skill so that it becomes automatic. This also greatly helps them with their spelling. Watch the video to practice saying the letter sounds correctly.ldren also practise reading (and spelling) what we call ‘red words’, such as ‘once,’ ‘have,’ ‘said’ and ‘where’.

The children practise their reading with books that match the phonics and the ‘red words’ they know.

Below you can find the links to some videos that will help you understand what phonics is and how it is taught and also how to pronounce sounds correctly when you are reading with your child.

Computing: Programming

In our computing lessons we have been learning to programme a bee-bot by giving clear and precise instructions. We practised this by becoming a human bee-bot and a controller. Then, we completed challenges on the virtual bee-bot programme by ging precise instructions to programme the bee-bot.

World Book Day 2023

Mathematics

We worked together to solve addition number sentences using cubes to support our counting.

Year 1 having a great time exploring our outdoor reading shed.

We enjoyed story time with some brave children reading aloud to the rest of the class.

Science Experiment

In our science lesson we tested different materials to find out what would be the best material to make an umbrella for a teddy bear. We had lots of fun being scientists!
