MFL Statement of Intent
At Cottingley Primary Academy, our MFL curriculum is ambitious, well-structured, and inclusive, ensuring that all pupils develop a love for languages and an appreciation of different cultures. Our carefully sequenced curriculum introduces new vocabulary, knowledge, and skills progressively, enabling children to build on their prior learning and deepen their understanding of language structures. We want all children at Cottingley Primary Academy to leave in Year 6 with a well-rounded understanding, knowledge and appreciation of the cultures surrounding them.

Our MFL Curriculum
Our key aim through the MFL curriculum is to foster a life-long appreciation of languages and other cultures to discover what is possible. Children will be able to recognise languages as a skill which can increase employability and widen opportunities. The curriculum also aims to provide children with an understanding of 11 different languages that are spoken within the wider community. (3 languages across Early Years and KS1 and a single language study in KS2 that builds on their existing language acquisition skills). In KS2, children will learn Spanish. This has been chosen due to high levels of our children and families speaking Portuguese, as well as most of our feeder schools teaching Spanish in Secondary school. We develop our key drivers amongst children, with a key focus on confidence and communication in MFL to better ready them for the future.
