DT Statement of Intent

At Cottingley Primary Academy, our Design and Technology curriculum is designed to inspire each child to choose a remarkable life. We provide numerous opportunities for them to design, make, and evaluate creative products that solve real problems. By selecting appropriate materials and developing technical expertise, students can find their unique talents and create memorable learning experiences. Our goal is to foster a love for learning and help children develop into lifelong learners who make a positive impact on the world.

Knowledge and Vocabulary

Our DT Curriculum

We want all children at Cottingley Primary Academy to leave year 6 with an appreciation, enjoyment and love for Design and Technology; we want children to have the skills and knowledge necessary to engage confidently in expressing themselves in a range of media. Children should leave having a secure subject specific vocabulary so they are able to articulate their thoughts and ideas - including being able to critique their creative process, identifying successes and challenges.

Our curriculum is based on the Kapow scheme of learning.

Through our Design and Technology curriculum we aim to teach discrete skills through our mechanisms and mechanical systems, cooking and nutrition, structures, textiles, digital world and electrical systems units. We provide children with the opportunity to apply their skills through other units linked to the wider curriculum.

Through each unit children are taught:

Designing - taking inspiration from a range of artists and craftspeople, making plans and material choices.

Making - using skills such as; joining, reinforcing, building, creating and assembling.

Evaluating - critiquing their own work and that of others.

Technical knowledge - understanding systems, naming products and materials and learning techniques.
