Art & Design Statement of Intent
At Cottingley Primary Academy, our Art curriculum is ambitious, well-structured, and inclusive for all learners. It provides a carefully sequenced development of artistic skills, techniques, and knowledge, allowing children to build on their creativity and express themselves confidently. Through exposure to a diverse range of artists, styles, and media, we broaden pupils’ cultural understanding and appreciation of the visual world. By cultivating a love for Art, we empower pupils to explore their creativity, celebrate their individuality, and understand the power of visual storytelling in the wider world.
Art & Design Sequence of Learning
Our Art & Design Curriculum
We want all children at Cottingley Primary Academy to leave year 6 with an appreciation, enjoyment and love for Art and Design; we want children to have the skills and knowledge necessary to engage confidently in expressing themselves in a range of media. Children should leave having a secure subject specific vocabulary so they are able to articulate their thoughts and ideas - including being able to critique their creative process, identifying successes and challenges.
Our curriculum is based on the Kapow scheme of learning. Through our art and design curriculum we aim to teach discrete skills through our ‘Formal Elements of Art’ and ‘Art and Design Skills’ units. The children’s work is mainly recorded in their sketchbooks. We then provide children with the opportunity to apply their skills through other units linked to the wider curriculum.
Through each unit children are taught:
Making skills - painting, drawing, printing, creating 2D and 3D art and crafting.
Generating ideas - taking inspiration from a range of artists and craftspeople.
Formal elements - colour, form, line, pattern, shape, texture and tone.
Knowledge of artists - knowledge of artists’ work and techniques,
Evaluating - critiquing their own work and that of others.
