CONTENT STANDARD
The learner demonstrates various ways of doing philosophy.
The content standard specifies what should be covered in the lesson on ways of doing philosophy. The basic question here is "what is philosophy?" The essential knowledge here is that philosophy is the love of wisdom and truth, which suggests that the basic question should be understood as "what are the ways of loving wisdom and truth?" The lesson should be about the process (how) of philosophy.
PERFORMANCE STANDARD
The learner realizes the methods of philosophy lead to wisdom and truth.
The performance standard specifies how the transfer of learning on ways of doing philosophy should be demonstrated by the learner at the end of the lesson. The learner should be able to demonstrate that the ways of doing philosophy as loving leads to wisdom and truth.
However, the necessary reordering of the learning competencies for this content requires the revision of this performance standard to reflect the last learning competency. The revised performance standard should be about realizing the methods of philosophy as loving wisdom and truth.
LEARNING COMPETENCIES
2.1 Distinguish opinion from truth. (Understanding)
LC 2.1 is concerned with the acquisition of knowledge. This LC is about learners understanding (a) what opinion is, (b) what truth is, (c) the difference between opinion and truth, and (d) how to move from opinion to truth. The appropriate assessment tool for the thinking skill targeted is an objective test of understanding. The appropriate teaching strategy that prepares the student to be successful with the assessment is anything that involves representation of ideas.
2.2 Analyze situations that show the difference between opinion and truth. (Analyzing)
LC 2.2 is concerned with making meaning out of the acquired knowledge. This LC is about learners analyzing situations in their own concrete experience for their applied understanding of opinion and truth. The appropriate assessment tool for the thinking skill targeted are written works. The appropriate teaching strategy that prepares the student to be successful with the assessment is anything that involves communication among constituent elements.
2.4 Evaluate opinions. (Creating)
LC 2.4 is concerned with making meaning out of the analyzed knowledge. This LC is about learners evaluating that opinions are not the way of philosophy. The appropriate assessment tool for the thinking skill targeted are written works. The appropriate teaching strategy that prepares the student to be successful with the assessment is anything that involves reasoning and proof.
2.3 Realize the methods of philosophy lead to wisdom and truth. (Applying)
LC 2.3 is concerned with transfer of the evaluated knowledge. This LC is about learners demonstrating how philosophy is love of wisdom and truth. The appropriate assessment tool for the thinking skill targeted are performance-based tasks. The appropriate teaching strategy that prepares the student to be successful with the assessment is anything that involves problem-solving.
This learning competency is re-ordered with the fourth for logical reasons. In the Revised Bloom's Taxonomy (2001), creating is a higher cognitive thinking skill compared to evaluating.
