CONTENT STANDARD
The learner understands the interplay between the individuality of human beings and their social contexts.
The content standard specifies what should be covered in this fifth lesson on the philosophy of the human person. The basic question here is "what is the human person?" The lesson should be about the human person as a being in society. From the previous lesson on being with others in an interpersonal way, this lesson introduces being with others in an institutional way. The lesson is about what the institutional relationship is and how this relationship should be lived.
The lesson should also demonstrate the philosophical approach to the human person as a being with other human persons in an institutional way. It should distinguish the philosophical approach defined in the first two lessons, which requires a holistic seeing and a concern for the truth, from two other non-philosophical approaches. The first non-philosophical approach is the layperson's natural approach which sees holistically but remains at the level of opinions. The second non-philosophical approach is the scientific approach which sees partially but is concerned for the truth.
The lesson on being with other human persons should be the third lesson about the human person in relation to others. In this lesson, the other is the institutional society. In this lesson also, the institution is seen as a human condition, that is, both a limitation and a possibility for transcendence. Thus, the human person must exercise freedom in her relation to this condition.
This lesson can make use of lessons from other core courses like Understanding Culture, Society and Politics.
PERFORMANCE STANDARD
The learner evaluates the formation of human relationships and how individuals are shaped by their social contexts.
The performance standard specifies how the transfer of learning on the human person as being in institutions should be demonstrated by the learner at the end of the lesson. The learner should be able to evaluate the interactive relationship between and among individual, interpersonal and institutional relationships.
LEARNING COMPETENCIES
7.1 Recognize how individuals form societies and how individuals are transformed by societies. (Understanding)
LC 7.1 is concerned with the acquisition of knowledge. This LC is about learners understanding (a) what a society is, (b) that societies are formed by individuals, and (c) that societies transform individuals (socialization). The appropriate assessment tool for the thinking skill targeted is an objective test of understanding. The appropriate teaching strategy that prepares the student to be successful with the assessment is anything that involves representation of ideas.
7.2 Compare different forms of societies and individualities (eg. agrarian, industrial and virtual). (Applying)
LC 7.2 is concerned with making meaning out of the acquired knowledge. This LC is about learners applying the acquired knowledge about the dialectical relationship between societies and individuals to different forms of societies and individuals. The appropriate assessment tool for the thinking skill targeted are written works. The appropriate teaching strategy that prepares the student to be successful with the assessment is anything that involves connections between concept and experience.
7.3 Explain how human relations are transformed by social systems. (Analyzing)
LC 7.3 is concerned with making meaning out of the applied knowledge. This LC is about learners analyzing the dialectics between interpersonal relationships and institutional relationships. The appropriate assessment tool for the thinking skill targeted are written works. The appropriate teaching strategy that prepares the student to be successful with the assessment is anything that involves communication of analyzed elements.
7.4 Evaluate the transformation of human relationships by social systems and how societies transform individual human beings. (Creating)
LC 7.4 is concerned with transfer of learning out of the analyzed knowledge. This LC is about learners demonstrating that societies can and must be changed when they are dehumanizing. The appropriate assessment tool for the thinking skill targeted are performance-based tasks. The appropriate teaching strategy that prepares the student to be successful with the assessment is anything that involves problem solving.
