Modalities
Therapeutic modalities are defined as ways of applying heat, cold, electricity, or another physical agent, like ultrasound, to the body to induce a desired effect. Those effects could be increased circulation, decreased pain or both, improve an anti-inflammatory condition, or increase musculoskeletal function and ROM.
Yorktown Sports Medicine offers a variety of modalities to aid in the treatment of sports related injuries. The modalities offered range from cryotherapy (ice) and thermotherapy (heat), to electrical stimulation, therapeutic ultrasound and lnfrared Laser Light Therapy. Though ice and heat can be applied by the student-athletes themselves in a prescribed manner, all other treatments are performed exclusively by the Certified Athletic Trainer. These modalities are utilized under the prescription of a physician in specific cases, or can be utilized by the Athletic Trainer acutely on conditions covered by the Athletic Trainers standing orders approved by the school physician.
These modalities are performed on a case by case basis. Since these treatments require a “hands on” approach, time and availability will dictate if the treatment can be given. Not all types of injuries benefit from these modalities. Clinical judgment is left up to the Athletic Trainer…not the Parent or Athlete.
