Brief description of CCA activities and prerequisite(s), if any:
The Astronomy Club in Victoria Junior College is a CCA run by a student executive committee under the guidance of teachers-in-charge. It serves to promote the study of Astronomy and allow students to learn areas such as Practical Astronomy, Celestial Mechanics, Nuclear Astrophysics and Cosmology.
Our Club is very much student-led and passion-driven. Weekly sessions will include a theory session and a night observation session using different telescopes - two 8-inch SCTs, several refractor and a solar telescope. We also help to organize science workshops and carnivals and occasionally outreach activities to the public. Of note is two competitions that members may participate in: the Singapore Astronomy Olympiad (March) and the NUS-NTU Astrochallenge (June) that pits the knoweldge, creativity and skills of the top schools against one another.
Members do not require any special equipment nor prior knowledge to join the Astronomy Club. However, we do expect active participation in the research sharing and regular attendance for the weekly meetings.
