Brief description of CCA activities
The VJC Guitar Ensemble performs in an orchestral set-up and our student musicians play classical guitars that are specially handcrafted in Japan and Spain. Together as an ensemble, you will be able to explore many genres of music, such as classical, jazz and pop. You will also develop a strong appreciation of musical theory and the performing arts, while building strong camaraderie with like-minded peers, as you work towards the shared goal of making music together.
Our key events and activities include the annual March camp and public concert Perfect Fifth, as well as the biennial SYF Arts Presentation. In alternate years, the ensemble seeks opportunities to participate in public performances or values-in-action projects outside the college.
The VJC Guitar Ensemble has two separate ensembles: the Senior Ensemble and the Junior Ensemble. The Senior Ensemble consists of experienced guitar players who are familiar with the classical guitar and/or have been part of a guitar ensemble previously. The Junior Ensemble comprises members who require further coaching in basic guitar playing techniques, or those who are able to play other musical instruments but not the guitar. Students without any music background are also welcome to join us in the Junior Ensemble.
Members are required to purchase a classical guitar & a tuner unless you already have them at home so that you can practice beyond guitar sessions. The classical guitar will cost about $150 - $200 and the tuner will cost about $20.
Please note that members in the Junior Ensemble are required to bring their own classical guitar & tuner for every practice session.

Q&A for VJC Guitar Ensemble (VJGE)
Q: What is a Niibori ensemble?
A: A Niibori Ensemble is a special ensemble formed only with special niibori guitars. These guitars have some resemblance to classical guitars but are made in a way to mimic the sound of a traditional orchestra.
Q: I don’t have music background. Can I still apply for VJGE?
A: Yes, of course! You are welcome to apply for the membership as we have instructor to cater to beginners :D
Q: Does the instructor do 1 to 1 coaching?
A: During practices, we learn new pieces as a section before combining as an ensemble. If you face difficulties along the way, our instructor and section leaders are always happy to provide more guidance.
Q: What kind of music does VJGE play? Does VJGE play pop music?
A: We play all genres of music. In addition to classical pieces, other genres such as jazz and popular music might be covered as well. What makes us unique is that our songs are arranged to suit a Niibori Guitar Ensemble, and as a result, you will learn new skills on the guitar.
Q: Why are there 2 different ensembles: Senior Ensemble and Junior Ensemble?
A: The Senior Ensemble is more for the advanced guitar players who are familiar with the classical guitar and playing in an ensemble setting. The Junior Ensemble is for members who might need to brush up on their basic guitar techniques, or for those who have no music background or have music background in other instruments and therefore need to learn how to play the guitar.
Q: How do I join the Senior Ensemble?
A: Our instructors will assess J1 members who wish to be considered for the Senior Ensemble.
Q: Must I purchase a classical guitar? Why?
A: It is necessary to purchase a CLASSICAL guitar unless you already have one at home. Members in the Junior Ensemble are required to bring their own classical guitars for practice every Mon and Tue/Wed. In addition, having your own instrument means that you can continue to practice on your own at home. This will allow you to monitor your own pace of learning so that you can competently contribute to the ensemble during combined practices.
Q: I have an acoustic guitar at home. Do I still have to purchase a classical guitar?
A: It would be most advisable to do so since acoustic guitars and classical guitars are constructed differently. The classical guitars have a different sound, due to the presence of nylon strings. This makes it more challenging to play, as compared to an acoustic guitar. Therefore, you will need to practise on a classical guitar to master the techniques that are required for the pieces that we play.
Q: If I am recruited into Guitar Ensemble, can I still join other CCA?
A: Yes! You are allowed to have more than 1 CCA. However, do note that you need to attain at least 80% attendance rate for the year in order to be awarded membership status. Therefore, if you have another CCA, please ensure that there is no clash in CCA schedule.
