Buying recommendations
If you are ready to buy a new University-funded computer, the ME-IT Computer Support Office will assist you with selecting a laptop, desktop, or workstation to fit your needs.
ME-IT offers full-service support for active U-M preferred vendors. Currently (2025) Apple, Dell, HP, & Lenovo.
For custom-built systems, ME-IT is happy to provide limited and basic assistance. If labs run into any hardware issues, warranty issues, stability issues, etc., those would need to be handled by the lab, as ME-IT does not have the resources to work with non-managed vendors directly.
The usual computer order/setup procedure is as follows:
1. Set up a time with us to discuss your computer needs and budget by emailing me-it@umich.edu, or calling 734-763-5007.
2. We will work directly with you to build a quote to fit your needs.
3. Orders are submitted in the ME Order System.
4. Once the computer arrives we will set up and deliver the computer.
ME-IT also offers many loaner devices.

ME-IT has multiple iPads with Apple Pencils in stock and is ready to loan if you teach a class. This applies to faculty and GSIs; the maximum loan duration is one semester when someone is teaching.
ME-IT has a limited number of loaner equipment for faculty and staff: Laptops, Cameras, Tripods, Polycom, adapters, projectors, etc. Email to me-it@umich.edu to submit a loaner request.
