Computers / Operating Systems
Supporting SPG 601.27, specifically Endpoint Security Administration and the comprehensive endpoint protection guidance, all ME-IT-supported U-M-owned systems must be managed by ME-IT. To comply with this, all hardware purchases must go through ME-IT.
All U-M-owned systems must have CrowdStrike, Tenable Nessus, and our remote admin tool.
ME-IT can install & support the following operating systems:
Microsoft Windows 11*
Ubuntu
Mac OS X (on Apple computers)
For Macs, ME-IT now uses U-M's Izzy for Mac Platform as a Service.
Endpoint Protection Guidance
Protecting the confidentiality and integrity of U-M systems and data is the responsibility of all members of the U-M community. The requirements for comprehensive endpoint protection are spread across several IT standards at U-M.
Information Security Support (including hardware, firmware, and BIOS updates) may be irregular, and manufacturers/developers may not provide explicit notice when such support is discontinued.
In the absence of official manufacturer communication regarding the end of security support, hardware shall be considered to no longer receive Information Security Support one year after the release date of the last manufacturer-provided update.
Software shall be considered to no longer receive Information Security Support if one or more of the following is true:
No updates or security patches have been publicly released or made available for the product within the past 36 months.
Vulnerabilities are not addressed despite being reported through industry-standard channels.
The software is not referenced in any current vendor support, product, or update materials.
No direct support or maintenance contracts are available, or the vendor/developer is unreachable.
If a significant security vulnerability is identified that the manufacturer elects not to remediate, and the vulnerability presents an unreasonable risk to the university’s systems, network, or data, the affected software may be subject to immediate network blocking and removal from service.
