Remote Desktop

ME-IT recommends Microsoft Remote Desktop for any remote connections to Windows computers.

If you need to remotely connect to a Mac desktop, please use Mac Screen Sharing

If you need to remotely connect to a Linux desktop, please contact me-it@umich.edu.

Tools like TeamViewer and LogMeIn bypass UM’s security infrastructure and are not allowed. Please see https://its.umich.edu/projects/irap.

Zoom's remote support feature allows vendors or non-UM users to take control of a system attended to by a U-M staff/student/faculty member. We suggest you enable remote support before the Zoom meeting.

How To Remotely Connect to a ME Desktop

1. Connect to the UM VPN. - https://sites.google.com/a/umich.edu/me-it-public/home/vpn---working-remotely

2.  Open the Remote Desktop Connection by clicking the Windows icon and typing Remote Desktop Connection (shown below).

3. Once the Remote Desktop Connection window opens, enter your computer name into the “Computer:” field and click “Connect”.

Example: me-mycomputername

4.       When prompted for credentials, enter your UM username and password. For the username, you must append the name with UMROOT, as shown below.

Example: UMROOT\username

5.       If you receive a message regarding the identity of the remote computer not being verified, simply click “Yes” to proceed.

6.       Duo should prompt you to authenticate at this point.

7.       You should now be connected to your ME system remotely.
