In August 1961, the communist government of East Germany began building the Berlin Wall. The government told the world that they were building the wall to keep the citizens of West Berlin from entering East Berlin. In reality, they built the wall to keep East Germans from escaping to West Berlin and then to the democratic west. Tens of thousands of East Germans escaped to West Berlin before the wall was built. Once the wall went up, people still tried to escape. One way people tried to escape was by building tunnels underneath the wall. Some tunnels were successful, but many were not.
