The United States dropped the first atomic bomb over the densely populated city of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. No one new what would happen once the bomb was detonated. Three days later another atomic bomb was dropped over the city of Nagasaki. For over a year the United States government kept strict control over who was allowed into these two cities and what information was given to the media and the public. The government did not want the people to know about the horrible devastation caused by the atomic bombs and their long lasting effects. A year later, in 1946, reporter John Hersey was allowed into Hiroshima. He secretly began interviewing atomic bomb survivors. He and the New Yorker magazine managed to secretly write and publish a magazine issue about it. The article was an instant sensation. This book tells the story of how he and the New Yorker magazine did it.
