Today's children are surrounded by technology, and it has become a fundamental part of their lives. In an age of instant everything, children need more guidance than they did twenty years ago. Because of instant access to everything, do today's children know the difference between needs and wants (entitlements) and impulse verses the ability to act on them? Do they have the social skills necessary to thrive in real life situations without the use of technology? According to Dr. Oist, even though technology affects our values, behavior, and attitudes, parents need to maintain a loving and communicative relationship with their children. Parents need to set limits. Parents need to be active parents and not passive parents. Active parents guide their children to understand the differences between needs and wants and give them the skills to deal with the negative influences of technology and culture. Passive parenting will not work with Generation Text kids. This is a book that everyone should read.
