Pinoy Bayanihan Project Wins Asia-Pacific Stevie Awards

The Pinoy Bayanihan Project was one of the recipients of the world's most coveted  Stevie® Awards during the awarding ceremony held on may 27, 2016 in Sydney, Australia. The Project bagged the Bronze Awards for innovation in community relations for public service communications. The entry of the Pinoy Bayanihan Project was made possible by PAGCOR. 

Stevie Awards were created in 2002 to honor and generate public recognition of the achievements and positive contributions of organizations and working professionals worldwide.  In short order the Stevie has become one of the  prizes.  The Asia-Pacific Stevie Awards are open to all organizations in the 22 nations of the Asia-Pacific region.                                                        

The focus of the Asia-Pacific Stevie Awards is on the recognition of innovation: innovation in all its forms.  All of the categories in this program recognize innovation in some aspect of business achievement and work life.

The Pinoy Bayanihan Project - NCR Production Site was conceptualized by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) in partnership with the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) as funding partner, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) as the source of confiscated lumber and the Department of Education (DepEd) as the end-user have joined forces to address the country’s basic education huge backlog of school armchairs utilizing the confiscated logs and lumber. 

 

In late 2012, the Pinoy Bayanihan Project - NCR Production Site in collaboration with the Association of Construction and Informal Workers or ACIW was established only after the 55 container vans containing illegal lumbers were confiscated by the Bureau of Customs and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) at the Port of Manila. The entire preparation of the NCR Production Site was immediately started sometime in late 2012 which include facility rehabilitation, procurement of wood working machines, competency-based learning materials, tools and other training needs. Accordingly, the production of armchairs began on January 2013 utilizing the initial delivery of confiscated illegal lumber by DENR.  

The NCR Production Site have produced and delivered a total of 13,840 armchairs benefitting some 35 different DepEd schools in Metro Manila. In terms of number of trainees/beneficiaries, a total of 275 individuals have acquired competencies specifically in Furniture-Making (Finishing) NC II, Furniture and Cabinet Making and Woodworking Machine Operation.
