Now I have to admit, this was the first time that I have ever been to Nizwa even though I live in Muscat which is about 2-3 hours away by car. Nizwa is such an enjoyable place in every single aspect you could think of. I remember how the Omani elders invited us to join them and drink Qahwa and how polite were the Halwa sellers. Now with all of those great examples of wonderful things in Nizwa, the attraction that amazed me the most was the gigantic Nizwa Fort. I have been to many other forts in Oman but this one had something special. Whether it was the fun my friends and I had or just the brilliance of the Omani tour guide, I still can't tell why I really really enjoyed my visit to Nizwa Fort. Now I will provide a brief overview of this important monument. Nizwa Fort was built in the 1650s by Imam Sultan Bin Saif Al Ya'rubi. It was built to defend Nizwa from the forces of the Portuguese army. As its main purpose in the past was to defend the city and its people, Nizwa Fort is used as a tourist attraction today. It is very famous and is now one of Oman's most visited landmarks. Tremendous amounts of effort have been put by the Omani government to preserve this fort as it is the work of our grandfathers who fought bravely to defend the pride and name of our country.
My first visit to Nizwa has been such an amazing experience and I hope that we will get the opportunity to go and explore other famous Omani landmarks in the future.
