Robotics Club

Robotics has always been a passion of mine. I was part of a competitive robotics club in my old school, and I really find enjoyment in building creative useful robots. Upon hearing that there was a robotics club in UWC ISAK, I immediately joined the club and started introducing my ideas to the club leaders. I was slightly surprised that the club works with Arduino rather than VEX robots, but nevertheless, I was still excited to start building projects.

While the current robotics club is a success, I really aim to slightly change the structure of it. I want to increase the teamwork and collaboration aspect of the club, which was also an important idea in my old school. I believe that working collaboratively, especially for this club, is essential as it will speed up the process of completing a project. For example, if I work on building and another student works on programming an Arduino, we will be able to finish a mini project in less than an hour.

As stated earlier, I really enjoy the building aspect of the process. I know how to play around with wires and how to build a really creative useful robot. One area that I should develop in the future is my programming skills. I know how to program the commands for the robot, but I am slow at writing the code. I feel like my time would be used in a more effective manner if I actually work on the building aspect, which is why I view this as a problem. My goal for the future is to leave the building area which I am good at, and veer more towards the programming side. I have already started writing a programming code for my current robot, and will make sure to write more codes in the future.

I have a 100% commitment towards this project. I want to slightly modify the club, by allowing non club members to actually view and maybe play with our Arduinos. I also want to create robotics competitions between us, the members. This may be difficult, especially since Arduino robots are not as competition friendly as VEX robots, but I still hope that I can make this change. I completely understand that it may not be possible to achieve all of those changes, but that will not stop me from trying at least. All those changes that I want to make demonstrate my commitment to this project, and show that I will try my best to modify the structure of this club.

The main problem that university professors are complaining about in the world today is the inability of students to do hands on practical world in their fields of study. Students know how to study and understand a certain concept, but find difficulties in applying this concept that they learned in the actual world. I believe that the robotics club is providing the opportunity for us to gain experience in the practical area of work, which is why I feel that it is trying to aid in the solving of this worldwide problem.

Some high schools actually offer robotics as a course, and this demonstrates the importance of it. I personally love the current club in school. We may be a few members, but I really enjoy the fact that our club supervisor is knowledgeable in the Arduino robots field.

I would say that my culture focuses more on car mechanics rather than robots, but I also see the growth of robotics in Oman, and I aim to be a part of the generation that experiences and enjoys the benefit of this growth.
