This is an Medical Inquiry. Students will investigate a medical problem from the perspective of a physician and laboratory technician. They will be presented with a case, and investigate it in related laboratory activities and on the Web using the CDC, NIH and other medical related web sources.

You are the Doctor: PART I:
1. A patient is presented. Joey Smith , Male age 2. The mother describes the symptoms:
Mom says," Joey was walking well, but now is having trouble getting up from a seated position to walk."
2. You conduct a physical exam and find muscle weakness.
3. You ask the mother about her family history. Mom says," I had a brother who had a similar problem. He had ..." The family history identifies the likely cause.
Some tests might be done to positively confirm the disease.
(We will discuss it in class.)
Physicians notes : Disease identified : Put a brief description, and what treatment are you suggesting ( This is discovered by web research)? What would you tell the parents about the possibilities of other children having the disease...(See below and discussed in class).

A. Physician's notes ( discussed in class, the patient interview.)
1. Include the patient interview. Then explain some of the possible causes of the patient's symptoms and what tests would be needed to investigate the possibilities. Explain some of the tests. For example explain what an MRI is and why one would be needed.
2. Disease identified : Put a brief description, and what treatment are you suggesting?
3. What would you tell the parents about the possibilities of other children having the disease...
B. Digital Microscope Images Lab Report: EACH Student must take their own digital images.
Normal Histology of skeletal muscle: Your goal is to get a crisp, clear image of the muscle striations and the sarcomere. THIS TAKES TIME, EFFORT AND PATIENCE.

C. Web Research with APA documentation
The work for this will be done in class. There may be some to finish up outside of class, but significant class time will be given.
1. Give Details about the disease or disorder.
2. Use at least three sources to produce a profile of DMD. Use Parenthetical notations to credit sources within the paper. This will be reviewed in class.
3. Report the symptoms, tests that are given, genetics involved, prognosis, treatments available, and related information.
4. Also, explain what methods are available to avoid the disorder.
5. A Works Cited: APA format with three or more sources for Web Research on the Disease.
