Chemistry - Study of Matter and the Changes it undergoes.
Sounds like matter is pretty important so what is matter anyways?
Matter - Anything that has mass and takes up space.
à Matter is composed of tiny particles called atoms.
The different types of atoms are called elements. The different types are arranged on the periodic table. They are numbered in order of increasing atomic number (more on what that means next unit: "Atomic Structure").
.:Chemistry Sidebar:.
In order to get the best understanding, scientists like to organize or classify matter. They classify matter (compounds etc) based on different properties.
Properties can be quantitative (using numbers) or qualitative (descriptive).
Some properties from the image above could include:
Important classifications to distinguish properties:
Energy may be defined as the ability to do (physical) work. Often measured in joules.
