FAQ about scientific Calculators
What is a scientific Calculator? Isn't that a graphing calculator?
A calculator does not have to have the big graphing screen in order to be considered scientific. Scientific calculator has the ability to work with extremely large and small numbers. In chemistry we deal with things at an atomic level so the calculator you use must be able to handle these extreme proportions!
How do I know it's a scientific calculator?
You will see functions like the pi function or e key. Scientific calculators can handle large exponents (the main reason we need them in chemistry). The main point of of interest on the calculator is the exponent keys. Exponent keys will usually look like the following: "EE", "EXP", "Exp", "10x" , " ^ " (carrot key is usually seen on graphing calculators) Pictures of examples are provided below this FAQ :-)
How do I know if a device *NOT* scientific calculator?
You will notice that the calculator has no real function for exponents.
Aren't they expensive?!
NO! You can acquire a cheep model under ten bucks. I have several in class that I found for 1$ at dollar tree!
Can I just use my graphing calculator?
absolutely! Please put your name on your device and keep track of it!
What about my phone?
For academic reasons, phones are not allowed on chemistry exams. It is discouraged to use your phone in place of a calculator. There are limited supplies in this classroom; calculators cannot be checked out.
