Naming Covalent Compounds only:
Prefixes to know:
1 - mono
2- di
3- tri
4- tetra
5- penta
6- hexa
7- hepta
8- octa
9- nona
Naming Covalent Compound Rules:
If the first element is 1 do not give it a prefix.
CO = Carbon monoxide
(there is only one carbon atoms, so we just say carbon according to this rule.
Everything else gets a prefix
Carbon monoxide Although there is only one oxygen atom it comes second so it gets a prefix (1 = mono, so it is monoxide).
Last element gets ide.
