Mixtures are a physical blend of two or more substances. Physical means that the substances are litereally sitting next to each other. Chemical would mean that the particles (atoms) are chemically conjoined or "linked" together.
Mixtures are classified in two ways. Mixtures can be homogeneous or heterogeneous.
Hetero = opposite
Homo = Same
Homogeneous Mixtures
Homogeneous Mixtures - Uniform throughout. If you have an aquarium of a given substance and you take a sample from the top and from the bottom, the composition of the samples will be exactly the same.
Examples:
Chocolate Chip Cookie
Milk
Jug of Liquid Detergent
Paint
Air (unless you go to different elevations)
Heterogeneous Mixtures
heterogeneous Mixtures - Are not uniform throughout. If you ahve an aquarium of a given mixture and you take two samples (from the top and from the bottom), you will have different amounts(compositions) of substances.
Examples:
Sugar Cookie
Noodle Soup
A fish tank with fish and rocks and plants
Your Finger
Granite
Sand
-Many times you can physically see the separate components
-Components not evenly distributed
-Contains two or more phases.
