Quick review of sentence patterns
IN: Write an into paragraph on bullying and social media. Explain the following information: What is bullying? Where is bullying happening? Who is being bullied? How is social media used in bullying? Why is the topic complicated? End your intro with a thesis.
OUT: Write a conclusion using the following guidelines: Explain that the debate is complicated and what makes it complicated. Restate thesis. Explain what both sides have in common. Explain how the topic is changing. Offer solutions for both sides. Explain the importance of finding a solution. End with a fact, startling statement, quote, anecdote, or provocative series of questions.
MAKE UP WORK: Come in to make up the grammar test
First write an outline (thesis and four topic sentences. Next, write a 3 paragraph essay (intro, 1 body paragraph, conclusion) on the topic of bullying. Read the two paragraphs in the Academic tone practice handout. Which paragraph seems more formal and academic? What is the difference between the two paragraphs? What did you learn from comparing the two paragraphs? One side is for regulating social media because it increases bullying, and the other side is against regulating social media because it is not to blame.
