• Read the example essay on R2 handout in pairs and switching at the following seven breaks: intro 1-4, thesis, body 1, body 2, body 3, body 4, conclusion. Color code and label the structures.
• Watch "Intro to Rhetoric" on YouTube
• List the following rhetorical devices with definitions: anaphora, ethos, pathos, logos, rhetorical question, claims (rhetoric), juxtaposition, examples, personal anecdotes, facts/statistics, evidence, diction, attention to audience, establishing common ground, call to action
• Watch Severn Suzuki's UN speech
• Groups identify rhetorical devices in speech and connect to effect: ethos, logos, or pathos
• Write five "by verbings" and five "through the use of" about Watson's use of rhetoric
