9/4 EQ: How does composition relate to my life?

• Parts of speech pre assessment
• Class introductions (The name game)
• "Students get paid for attending school!" Explain the aforementioned statement.
• Course overview: How did this class come about? Why is passing this class important for graduation? What is the model for this course?
• Pass out 3x5 cards with prepositions on them. Start with this image. What is a preposition? What is a prepositional phrase? Identifying prepositions on IXL 6th grade FF.1 (with 3x5 cards of prepositions)
• Introduce composition notebook (college ruled needed by Friday)

Make-up: Take/finish Cornell notes on the presentation "Course Overview." Submit the Cornell note to Ms. Newton's inbox within seven days of absence. Acquire a college-ruled composition notebook for class on Friday.

9/5 How will I benefit from developing writing skills?

• Why is writing important? (students are assigned questions to answer: see title slide for instructions)
• Students highlight their important items before finding this list of important items in syllabus & discuss Syllabus
• Page 51 of the PHS student handbook
• Why learn prepositional phrases?
• Using prepositional phrases, students write a paragraph about a mouse.
• Whiteboard graffiti: list as many prepositions as you can.

Make-up: Take/finish Cornell notes on the presentation "Why Is Writing Important?," take/finish Cornell notes on the "Syllabus" (links above), and write a paragraph that describes a mouse running into the room. Submit the Cornell notes to Ms. Newton's inbox within seven days of absence.

9/6 Why is it important to understand specific components of writing?

IN: According to the information you've heard over the last two days, what is Composition and why is writing important?

• Set up notebooks
• Explain the grading of notebooks
• Students write a letter to Ms. Newton : How do I feel about writing? Why? What experiences have you had with writing? What kind of writing do I think I will do in the future? How important is writing to my future?
• Subject/ Verb pre-assessment

OUT: By the end of this semester you will be able to do the following: write a 5-paragraph essay in two class periods, construct each of the nine sentence patterns perfectly, format three different types of essay, create elegant sentences, and identify the different types of clauses and phrases.

Make-up: Acquire a college-ruled notebook and see me about grading policies and to take a pre-assessment; also, come set up your notebook, and write a letter to your teacher following the above link.
