Review R2: What information do I need in order to start my essay?

OUT: What are other words for effective/ineffective? Ethos, Pathos, Logos brainstorm.

MAKE UP WORK: Watch the UN speech linked above. Using the speech, write a thesis and three topic sentences. Write three of each of the following: "by verbing" and "through the use of" on Emma Watson's speech. Take notes on the handouts linked on the date of your absence and take notes on the following IXL exercises: 7th P.5, 8th P.5, 9th P.4. You can submit the notes (include the IN and OUT) to my in-box. Please make sure the date of the absence is identified on the make-up work.

  • IN: Read the RA Prompt and check for understanding. Read the prompt carefully; what does it tell you about Richard Calhoun's argument? What information does it tell you to look out for?
  • Read through the rhetorical analysis article.
  • Identify the rhetorical devices in the article. Working in groups, list as many rhetorical devices as you can find-white board activity.
  • Brief constructed response: What are the strengths of the article? What are the areas of the article that are not as strong? (Consider ethos, pathos, and logos appeals)
  • Ethos/Pathos/Logos jigsaw

OUT: Write the rhetorical analysis outline- write a thesis and three topic sentences.

MAKE UP WORK: Identify the rhetorical devices used in the article. Identify ethos/pathos/logos examples. Brief constructed response: what are the strengths of the article? Pick 5 devices and explain the effect of those 5 devices. Out of the 5 devices, choose 3 that you will focus on in your essay.
