ENGLISH: 

NCEA Level 3 CODE: 3ENG

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:  NCEA Level 2 13 credits including the internally assessed writing and reading standards, AS 2.4 (91101) and 2.9 (91106).

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  In this course students will deepen their appreciation and enjoyment of stories and storytelling with an emphasis on exploring different methods to unpack meaning and critically evaluate the effectiveness of great works of film and literature. They will have the opportunity to learn about and apply literary theories as they study a mixture of set texts and self-selected texts.  Overall, the course is designed to enhance students’ reading, writing, thinking and speaking skills to a confident level where they are prepared for Tertiary level English studies

ASSESSMENT:   Level 3 Achievement Standards - up to 20 credits assessed both internally and externally.   Students will have some say over which standards they elect to enter into.

It is preferable that students have their own copy of the class text for annotations and notes. This can be a new, second hand or electronic copy. We are able to lend students a copy of the text; however if this is misplaced or lost it will incur the cost of a brand new copy to replace it.

MEDIA: 

NCEA Level 3 CODE: 3MED

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:  14 credits 2MED or, if taking Media for the first time, English 2ENG including at least one writing based standard in either course (2MED: 2.3 or 2.4 (external) and 2ENG: 2.1, 2.2 (externals) or 2.4).

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  Level Three Media amalgamates Social Sciences, and the Arts into a creatively rewarding, yet academic study of film and its relationship with society. Students will craft a sophisticated narrative short film utilising advanced techniques providing them with a sound foundation should they want to pursue a career in media production, the creative industries, journalism and content creation.  Also, students will explore how different critical lenses can be used to reveal different meanings within a single media text. Additionally, they will  delve into the dark world of Slasher Films as they explore American national identity through this thrilling yet insightful film genre. And lastly, students will engage with contemporary academic theory as they investigate a development within social media and its implications. 

ASSESSMENT:  Level 3 Achievement Standards - 16 credits internally assessed, 4 credits externally assessed

COURSE CONTRIBUTION:  Nil, however a day trip is hoped to be offered which will incur a small cost.
