ART DESIGN:  

NCEA Level 2                   CODE: 2ADE

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:  Prior completion of Year 11 APD is suggested or in consultation with the HOD 

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This course focuses on developing design knowledge and skills by learning to communicate visually. This course will focus on teaching students about ‘Branding’ where students get a chance to design various tools ranging from logo and poster to website and app designs to promote their brand based on their artist model analysis. Students will use computer programmes (mainly Adobe Creative Suite including Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign) to explore a range of design techniques and ideas. This is a largely practical course with a small component of theory.

ASSESSMENT:  Level 2 Achievement Standards - 8 credits internally assessed, 12 credits externally assessed

COURSE CONTRIBUTION:  Materials contribution $20, Purchase Portfolio Papers $30 and Sketchbook $10 from school (Art Department). Students should keep their printing account in credit.

We highly recommend students to purchase Adobe Creative Suite through school, which is $15 for a year. Before paying for the license, students must check their computer specs with our IT department.

ART PAINTING:  

 NCEA Level 2                          CODE: 2APA

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:  Prior completion of Year 11 APA is suggested or in consultation with the HOD

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This course focuses on developing painting knowledge and skills. Students will explore a range of painting techniques and ideas based on appropriate artist models and movements from NZ and abroad. The portfolio submission is negotiated with the teacher based upon student interest and ability within the field of painting and printmaking. This is a largely practical course with a small component of theory.

ASSESSMENT:  Level 2 Achievement Standards - 8 credits internally assessed, 12 credits externally assessed

COURSE CONTRIBUTION:  Materials contribution $20, Purchase a personal kitset (approximately) $50 and Sketchbook $10 from school (Art Department)

ART PHOTOGRAPHY:  

NCEA Level 2                                      CODE: 2APH

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:  Prior completion of Year 11 APD is suggested or in consultation with the HOD

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This course focuses on developing photographic knowledge and skills. This is a digital course where students will use digital cameras and develop their work using Photoshop. Students will get a chance to analyse artist models and use this knowledge to generate their own work. This is a largely practical course with a small component of theory.

ASSESSMENT:  Level 2 Achievement Standards - 8 credits internally assessed, 12 credits externally assessed

COURSE CONTRIBUTION:  Materials contribution $20, Purchase Portfolio Papers $30 and Sketchbook $10 from school (Art Department). Students should keep their printing account in credit.

Whilst the students have access to some cameras at school if they are taking Photography to level 3 we would recommend them purchasing their own digital SLR camera.

DRAMA: 

NCEA Level 2                                  Code 2DRA

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:  NCEA Level 1 Drama 12 credits or previous performance experience, as supported by HOD Drama.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  Students learn through practical, individual and group work using script, devising pieces, workshops and improvisation. They will explore and develop their use of the dramatic techniques of body, voice, movement and space.  They will further develop their understanding of the elements of drama and learn about general theatrical conventions and the features of a specific theatre form. The course offers the opportunity for students to develop self-confidence, communication skills, problem-solving skills and general performance skills.  A full scale production is the highlight of the year. Students will need to make themselves available for some after school rehearsals to gain the credits for this Achievement Standard. Some standards have an attendance requirement. Evening theatre trips are also a highlight of this course. Some theatre trips may occur during school hours.

ASSESSMENT:  Level 2 Achievement Standards - 14 -18 credits internally assessed, 4 credits externally assessed

COURSE CONTRIBUTION:  $50 maximum; dependent upon performances



MUSIC: 

NCEA Level 2          CODE: 2MUS

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:  NCEA Level 1 14 credits in Music or at the discretion of the HOD of Music.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This course will be individually designed for students to focus on their strengths in music. Students can either decide to focus on performance or Music History and build their programme around these two areas.  Students who decide to concentrate on performance will need to be having tuition privately or through the School Itinerant Music scheme on their performance instrument.  All students are encouraged to take part in one of the co-curricular music groups.

ASSESSMENT:  Level 2 Achievement Standards - the composition of internal and external assessment will vary depending on student selection of standards but a typical programme will have a total of 16 credits assessed.  Students who select this course cannot attempt AS91271: Compose two substantial pieces of music

COURSE CONTRIBUTION:  Up to $75 per term for instrumental/vocal music tuition, unless arranged privately.

MUSIC TECHNOLOGY: 

NCEA Level 2 CODE: 2MUT

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:  Level 1 Music preferable, proficiently play a musical instrument or at the discretion of the HOD of Music.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This course is designed for students who want to focus on Composition and Music Technology. Students will use a mixture of music tools to compose music, write their own lyrics and will receive training in recording, mixing, and producing recorded music. This will be a mixed level course and can also be taken in conjunction with 2MUS

ASSESSMENT: Level 2 Achievement Standards - the composition of internal and external assessment will vary depending on student selection of standards but a typical programme will have a total of 16 credits assessed.  Students who select this course cannot attempt AS91270: Perform two substantial pieces of music as a featured soloist

Semester Courses



PERFORMING ARTS TECHNOLOGY - SCHOOL SHOW  

Code: 2PAA

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is a first semester course and will focus on the school show. Students will design the lighting  or design and operate the sound or design and make props/set pieces or costumes for the school production. There are 6 areas that are under the PAT domain at Level 2. Depending on the skills of students they may take other standards at other levels. They will also be able to work on Drama productions and extra curricular activities so that there are enough opportunities depending on the number of students and their interests and skills. An awareness of Health and Safety protocols is part of the course requirements.

PERFORMING ARTS TECHNOLOGY - LEVEL 2 DRAMA PRODUCTION 

Code: 2PAB

COURSE DESCRIPTION: In the second half of the year this semester course will focus on L1 and L2 Drama production requirements and there will also be potential for research and design aspects for costume/ props/ set design and construction - some of these are about the process and could be focused on the next school production. 

Maintaining equipment - doing electrical safety checks and keeping spaces neat and tidy would also be part of the course. An awareness of Health and Safety protocols is part of the course requirements.
