COURSE DESCRIPTION:   Students will learn how to process transactions for a small business using the XERO accounting software package and will develop their financial decision making skills based around a contemporary accounting issue.  There will be a visit to a local business to analyse their inventory system.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: “Nāu te rourou nāku te rourou ka ora ai te iwi - with your food basket and my food basket, the people will thrive.” Students will gain an in-depth knowledge of Te Ao Haka - The world of Haka & Tikanga Māori. This semester course will focus on performing an item & responding to a performance.

ASSESSMENT: 10 Level 2 Achievement Standards - 6 internally assessed, 4 externally assessed

Please note that the new standards are achievement standards which are significantly different to previous years. Students will have the opportunity to gain university entrance through Te Ao Haka.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Open entry. Only requirement is that you are prepared to accept challenge and step outside your comfort zone.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Let's get together to build a group and create some memories through learning and participate in the outdoors safely. We will develop an understanding of our place (Newlands / Te Whanganui-a-Tara). You will test and apply a variety of outdoor skills. You get the chance to  develop your group work, planning and organisational skills and apply different leadership strategies to assist to a groups effective functioning. This course will build to participating in a ski trip at Mt Ruapehu.

ASSESSMENT:  Level 2 Physical Education Achievement Standard 6 credits Internally assessed (Potential for inclusion of another 4 credits).

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is an entirely practical course that will allow you to participate regularly in movement related activities. Throughout different contexts you would be challenged to develop your self direction, attitude and values which will help you to make responsible decisions. A key focus will be working together to develop as a group.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Our hauora / well being is the most important aspect of our lives. We need to be able to maintain all aspects if we are to live full and happy lives. In these 4 hours a week you will spend time learning how to be active and train to maintain all aspects of your Hauora / Wellbeing. Alternatively an individual's focus could be around training for individual sporting performance. You will learn how to plan and implement a training programme. The class would be encouraged to participate in some form event to apply learning in an outside contexts. It will involve a combination of practical and theory lessons.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This course is designed for students interested in the study of Space. Students will investigate the technology that may be used for human exploration of Mars. They will also explore the relationship between the Sun, Earth and Moon. Students will learn by refining skills, particularly understanding, processing and interpreting information; identifying trends, patterns and relationships; and researching and communicating scientific ideas.

ASSESSMENT: Level 2 Achievement Standards - 4 credits internally assessed and 4 credits externally assessed.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This is a semester course is designed to give students a knowledge of environmental science issues at Level 2.  It covers the environmental impact of farming, followed by human effects on the ocean. This course would suit students who wish to study science but do not wish to specialize by doing a full year course.

GEOGRAPHY - PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY: 2GEA

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  Study of the interaction between climate, vegetation and landforms around the Southern Alps. Work will be based around a field trip to Lake Rotoiti in the South Island to study a glaciated environment. The course will also look at the sustainability, change and different perspectives around the human impact on the South Island High Country. Students will further develop their research and mapping using GIS, this is a geographic information system which lets us visualise, question, analyse, and interpret data to understand relationships, patterns, and trends.

ASSESSMENT:  Level 2 Achievement Standards. Students select a range of internally and/or externally assessed standards. The course should comprise of approx 9-10 credits.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  By studying Geography, students are able to recognise the responsibilities they have in relation to other people, the environment, and the long-term sustainability of the planet. In this course, the emphasis is on human geography. Students are encouraged to think critically as they investigate contemporary geographic issues and consider possible solutions, explore the various perspectives of different groups of people, and investigate important issues of relevance to New Zealand and the wider world.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This first half semester course develops the historical skills of analysing primary and secondary sources for usefulness and reliability, and understanding of perspectives. These skills are developed through teacher led units exploring topics such as the rise of the Nazis and peace settlements after war. Students will then be able to select their own topic for each internal assessment.

 COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This second half semester course develops the historical skills of causes and consequences, and assessing significance. These skills are developed through a teacher led unit exploring the New Zealand Wars. Students will then be able to select their own topic(s) of significance to New Zealanders for use in both the internal and external assessments.

TOURISM - THE BUSINESS INTRODUCTION: 2TBI

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  An introduction which looks at both the characteristics of a tourist and the business of tourism. Students will delve into the reasons why people travel, what constitutes a tourists and what motivates them to travel. The course also covers the different components of tourism, what tourists ‘need’ and the nature of Tourism businesses. On offer is a meaningful introduction to New Zealand’s largest and constantly expanding industry.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: In this course students will get to explore and understand the economic importance of inbound and domestic tourism to New Zealand. They will also get the opportunity to research the characteristics of New Zealand as a tourist destination. 

From an international perspective, students will learn the locations of significant regions, countries and gateway cities around the world. They will also cover which regions and countries are significant tourist generating markets and host destinations. To cap this all off students will learn how to identify and describe tourist attractions, activities and events around the world.

PERFORMING ARTS TECHNOLOGY - SCHOOL SHOW: 2PAA

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is a first semester course and will focus on the school show. Students will design the lighting  or design and operate the sound or design and make props/set pieces or costumes for the school production. There are 6 areas that are under the PAT domain at Level 2. Depending on the skills of students they may take other standards at other levels. They will also be able to work on Drama productions and extra curricular activities so that there are enough opportunities depending on the number of students and their interests and skills. An awareness of Health and Safety protocols is part of the course requirements.

PERFORMING ARTS TECHNOLOGY - LEVEL 1 AND 2 DRAMA PRODUCTION: 2PAB

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The second half of the year this semester course will focus on L1 and L2 Drama production requirements and there will also be potential for research and design aspects for costume/ props/ set design and construction - some of these are about the process and could be focused on the next school production. 

Maintaining equipment - doing electrical safety checks and keeping spaces neat and tidy would also be part of the course. An awareness of Health and Safety protocols is part of the course requirements.

HOSPITALITY:  2HSPA / 2HSPB

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:  Open entry but recommended for learners with a clear interest in a cookery or hospitality-related career or those who wish to develop their food skills for part-time work in the hospitality industry. Due to the continuous practical assessment nature of this course it is not suitable for learners studying a Trades Academy programme. 


COURSE DESCRIPTION: A half-year semester course. This is a mainly practical course of industry Cookery Unit Standards where ākonga will have the opportunity to work in a simulated commercial kitchen environment to gain Unit Standards in food safety, knife skills, salad making and bakery.
