ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS: 

 NCEA Level 2                                  CODE: 2ECO


ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:  NCEA Level 1 12  credits from the 1COM course or a high standard in 1ENG/1SSH if the     student has not done the 1COM course 

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  The main focus of the Economics aspect of this course is to give students a broad understanding of the structure and function of the New Zealand economy. The main topics will be chosen from trade, inflation, economic growth, and the labour market.

Students will also complete a selection of Level 2 Business Studies Achievement Standards focusing on market research, motivation theory and running a business enterprise (Young Enterprise Scheme).  A variety of teaching methods are used including collaborative group tasks, simulation games, and case studies. Devices will be used extensively and structured written tasks will be completed using a write-on workbook.

ASSESSMENT:  Level 2 Economics and Business Achievement Standards - 12 credits internally assessed, 8 credits externally assessed 

COURSE CONTRIBUTION:  $30 for workbook.  $35 if students participate in the Young Enterprise Scheme

 Students can select between 1 and 4 semesters of this course. To select 4 semesters, enrol in all of  2SSH (full year course), 2SSA and 2SSB (semester courses). To select the full year course, just select 2SSH.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students are provided with the opportunity to explore  a range of different disciplines within the Social Sciences curriculum. Students will have the option to design their course in consultation with their teacher. For example, a student might opt for a course comprising of History, Classical Studies, Psychology, Religious Studies and Senior Social Studies standards.

ASSESSMENT:  Level 2 Achievement Standards - the composition of internal and external assessment will vary depending on student selection of standards but a typical programme might have 12 credits internally assessed, 8 credits externally assessed.

ACCOUNTING  A
(INTERNAL STANDARDS):

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Achieved the processing transactions standard in the 1COM course (90977) or a high standard in 1ENG and 1MAT.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:   Students will learn how to process transactions for a small business using the XERO accounting software package and will develop their financial decision making skills based around a contemporary accounting issue.  There will be a visit to a local business to analyse their inventory system.   

ASSESSMENT:  Level 2 Achievement Standards - 11 credits internally assessed,

ACCOUNTING  B

COURSE DESCRIPTION:   Students will develop their personal financial knowledge and skills by completing financial capability unit standards related to budgeting, consumer law  and personal income. 

ASSESSMENT:  Level 2 Unit Standards - 12 credits internally assessed which can be graded up to Excellence level.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This first half semester course develops the historical skills of analysing primary and secondary sources for usefulness and reliability, and understanding of perspectives. These skills are developed through teacher led units exploring topics such as the rise of the Nazis and peace settlements after war. Students will then be able to select their own topic for each internal assessment.

ASSESSMENT:  Level 2 Achievement Standards - 9 credits internally assessed.

HISTORY:

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This second half semester course develops the historical skills of causes and consequences, and assessing significance. These skills are developed through a teacher led unit exploring the New Zealand Wars. Students will then be able to select their own topic(s) of significance to New Zealanders for use in both the internal and external assessments.

ASSESSMENT:  Level 2 Achievement Standards - 5 credits internally assessed, 4-5 credits externally assessed depending on standard selected

GEOGRAPHY - PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY:

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:  NCEA Level 1 12 credits from related disciplines  1SSH/1GEO/1HIS/1ENG

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  Study of the interaction between climate, vegetation and landforms around the Tongariro Volcanic Centre. Work will be based around a field trip to Tongariro National Park. The course will also look at the formation of the volcanoes and interactions they have with the climate, vegetation and people. Students will further develop their research and mapping using GIS. This is a computer based mapping system where real world data is used to create visual maps to solve real world problems. 

ASSESSMENT:  Level 2 Achievement Standards. Students select a range of internally and/or externally assessed standards. The course should comprise of approx 9-10 credits.

GEOGRAPHY - LOCAL AND GLOBAL ISSUES:

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  By studying geography, students are able to recognise the responsibilities they have in relation to other people, the environment, and the long-term sustainability of the planet. In this course, the emphasis is on human geography. Students are encouraged to think critically as they investigate contemporary geographic issues and consider possible solutions, explore the various perspectives of different groups of people, and investigate important issues of relevance to New Zealand and the wider world.

ASSESSMENT:   Level 2 Achievement Standards. Students select a range of internally and/or externally assessed standards. The course should comprise of approx 9-10 credits.

TOURISM - THE BUSINESS INTRODUCTION:

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:  Open entry

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  An introduction which looks at both the characteristics of a tourist and the business of tourism. Students will delve into the reasons why people travel, what constitutes a tourists and what motivates them to travel. The course also covers the different components of tourism, what tourists ‘need’ and the nature of Tourism businesses. On offer is a meaningful introduction to New Zealand’s largest and constantly expanding industry.

TOURISM - DESTINATION TOURISM:

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:  Open entry

COURSE DESCRIPTION: In this course students will get to explore and understand the economic importance of inbound and domestic tourism to New Zealand. They will also get the opportunity to research the characteristics of New Zealand as a tourist destination. 

From an international perspective, students will learn the locations of significant regions, countries and gateway cities around the world. They will also cover which regions and countries are significant tourist generating markets and host destinations. To cap this all off students will learn how to identify and describe tourist attractions, activities and events around the world.
