EU Energy Labels

There are different types EU energy label that will be on a number of products that you buy. The purpose of these labels is to give information about how energy efficient the product is. One label is ranked from A+++ (the greenest/most energy efficient) down A++, A+, A, B, C to the least energy efficient label, D.

Due to complaints about the above label being confusing with so many categories of ‘A’ rating, there is a move to return to another form of EU label, which ranges from most energy efficient/darkest green A to B, C, D, E, F ending on least efficient/darkest red G.

The EU labels show the total energy consumption and other useful information relevant to the product e.g. noise level for washing machines, screen size for television. Products that are the most energy efficient can be more expensive to buy initially, but often cost less in the long run.

Products containing an EU energy label are:

    • refrigerators, freezers and fridge-freezers
    • washing machines
    • electric tumble dryers
    • combined washer-dryers
    • lamps (light bulbs)
    • electric ovens
    • air conditioners
    • televisions

It is the law for retailers to provide the EU energy label on above products, so if you cannot see the label then you have a right to ask the retailer for it!
