3 days ago, a Turkish military outpost was bombed, killing 15 Turkish soldiers. President Erdoğan has blamed a Turkish nationalist group for the attack. He also claims that this group was backed by Asaad as a direct response to tense Turkish-Syrian relations, specifically citing an event in which border guards killing 60 Syrians who tried to cross the border over to Turkey in August of 2016.
The Assad regime has denied a connection to the attack, and claimed that ISIS was somehow connected. They did not give any further explanation.
Russian president Putin has pushed for a complete shutdown of all trade to and from Turkey, which U.S. intelligence suspects a defense of Syria. Putin has urged the U.S. to place an embargo on Turkey, and says that any action taken to help Turkey without the approval of the Russian government will be seen as aggressive.
Additionally, recent intelligence reports reveal that Erdoğan and the Turkish military have been providing weapons and training to ISIS fighters in order to expedite the takedown of the Assad regime in Syria. In light of these events, many Americans are urging President Trump and the United Nations to take some form of action against Erdoğan and the Turkish government.
President Erdoğan called for a private meeting with President Trump this morning, in which he asked him to consider a bombing campaign of where Turkish intelligence suspects the Kurdish base is located.
The base is located along the border of Syria and Turkey. It currently containing 1,500 Kurdish combatants, but also 3,000 women and children who are civilians not involved in the fighting.
