Current Events Presentation
Students will be asked to demonstrate their ability to research and communicate the details of significant global events, apply their learning from the International Relations course and present these understandings clearly to an audience.
Step 1: Sign up for TWO Significant Global Current Events:
Your Chosen Stories Should:
Have taken place between January and June 2015.
Be Significant… in other words:
Have had a connection to or taken place in a nation other than the US.
Have a political, economic, military or humanitarian impact that affected people both in and outside of the country of origin.
Have been covered by major media outlets around the world.
Step 2: Have your Stories Registered/Crosschecked by Ms Anderson
Because the final part of this project will be to present your stories, multiple students many not choose the same new story.
Ms Anderson will gather stories from all class members and they will be approved on a first come, first served basis.
Step 3: Research Your New Stories
You will need to find 3 different news articles for each of your stories.
News articles must be gathered from a news source such as those listed on the classroom webpage.
Each of these articles will need to be cited as part of your final citations page for the project.
Read each article and gather the details about the events surround your story.
Round out your understanding of the events by reading additional academic materials on the events and related subjects.
Any additional reading material such as websites, books or magazine articles used as part of your research also needs to be cited on your final citations page.
Step 4: Create 3 Power Point Slides for Each of your News Stories.
Slides 1 & 2 - should have a summary of the events and any necessary background on the events.
Slide 3 - should explain the significant political, economic, military or humanitarian impact on people both in and outside of the country of origin. In other words, why does this story matter?
Text on all slides should be in short (1-2 sentence bullets).
Each slide should have a small image that helps with understand the topics depicted but does not distract from the audience’s ability to read/understand the slide.
Step 5: Present your Stories to Class
Each student will present their stories in class.
Presentations should last 10-15 minutes.
Presentations should be professional and demonstrate the presenter’s thorough understanding of the events of each story, background and related topics.
Presenters should be prepared to respond accurately to questions directly related to the stories researched and presented on.
