DBC Survey 2009

With over 80 people present at the Breed Council's November 2009 Conference we took the opportunity to ask people to give us some information on their experience of health and welfare conditions affecting Dachshunds.

The Survey used the categories from the Kennel Club's 2004 Survey, but with some minor changes to reflect specific, known conditions affecting Dachshunds and to add some categories from examples taken from other breeds' surveys.

The survey did not set out to be statistically valid, merely to provide some data that we could use to help formulate a more rigorous approach to health monitoring and it led to our on-line survey tool on this site. We received 45 completed Forms from exhibitors with experience ranging from a few years to those with decades of experience. Those completing the Survey were asked to indicate simply whether or not they had personal experience of the listed conditions. Some, helpfully, specified the number of dogs they knew of with each condition.

The following chart summarises the results, sorted by frequency and covering all six Dachshund varieties.

The data and comments received at the Conference show a slightly different picture to that reported from the KC Survey of 2004. Then, Reproductive (male plus female) was number 1 (19.7%), IVDD was number 2 (11.9%) and Dermatologic was third (10.5%). Cardiac and Dental were fourth equal (8.8%).
