Post date: Dec 25, 2012 9:10:38 PM

Prof Sheila Crispin will be attending the Miniature Dachshund Club's Championship Show at Ryton-on-Dunsmore on 10th February 2013 to offer a free, quick (2 mins. approx.) eye examination for any Mini Long at the show. This will be a test with bright light and magnifying glass.

Those wishing to participate must bring their dog’s REGISTRATION DOCUMENT, PEDIGREE and PEDIGREE PHOTOCOPY for record purposes.

Please download and complete an Examination Form here.

The reason for the test is that Claudia Busse, AHT, during the examinations for PRA Cord 1 found an incidence of 42% of Distichiasis without noting the seriousness of the condition. If there is found to be a serious problem, Cathryn Mellersh will be interested in a follow up at the AHT. A completed questionnaire is required for each dog. A follow up will be done in a years time to monitor any change of condition. We hope all will take advantage of this eye examination, Please note this session is solely to screen for Distichiasis as there is no time available for any testing under the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme.

Distichiasis: Extra eye lashes growing from the margin of the eye-lid may cause irritation or scarring of the cornea and excess tearing from the eyes. This condition may be present, but asymptomatic, requiring no treatment at all. Ophthalmic lubricants are most often chosen when mild tearing is the only clinical sign. In severe cases, surgery may be required, but the hairs can regrow.
