Day Blindness (NPHP4) in Wirehaired Dachshunds

Christine Gibson (WHDC) has now collected 45 cheek swab samples from Standard Wires to submit to the AHT for NPHP4 PRA research screening. We'll announce the results as soon as they are available. This mutation has, so far, only been reported in Scandinavian Wire Dachshunds and the AHT has kindly agreed to carry out this research to see if it is present in the UK Wires.

In addition to looking for the cord1 PRA mutation in the research sample of Mini Wires carried out last year, the AHT also looked at 64 of the same samples for a mutation (NPHP4) which has been reported by Norwegian researchers causing “Day Blindness” in Standard Wires. 4 “Carriers” were found with this mutation. One was of mixed breeding on our research list and another “Carrier” for this mutation was also a “Carrier” for cord1 PRA. Given the very low frequency of this mutation in Mini Wires the Council decided not to recommend further action for Mini Wire breeders at the moment.
