PRA testing non-UK dogs: DNA vs. Clinical Eye Tests

In the UK, DNA testing for Cord1 PRA is a Requirement under the Kennel Club's Assured Breeder Scheme and we expect all Breed Club members to use the available test. There is no excuse for producing any more Cord1 Affected puppies. The Breed Council also recommends anyone importing a Wire or Mini Wire from Scandinavia should ensure they know the DNA test status for another PRA mutation: NPHP4. This is associated with a form of day-blindness. The mutation frequency is very low in UK dogs and the DNA test is not therefore a requirement for UK dogs. Prior to the development of these DNA tests, many breeders had their breeding stock eye tested under the KC/BVA/ISDS Eye Scheme. This is a clinical examination which can identify other eye conditions in addition to PRA. A "Clear" or "Not affected" report means the dog was not found to be suffering from a partciular condition on the day it was examined. (It's a bit like an MOT Test; the result applies to the day of the test) If you are importing a dog to the UK you should ensure you understand which eye test(s) the dog has had. A dog reported as PRA Clear may be OK on a clinical eye examination, but this is not the same as a cord1 Clear DNA test result.
