Chant: Can you hear the Turks?

7000 BCE?

Nomadic horsemen?

We live in the Middle East.

Call us the Turks!

We live in tents and are nomadic horsemen.

Chant: Xiongnu coming. Xiongnu coming.

We are split up by the Xiongnu tribe!

We are the Saljuq Turks.

Coming to overthrow the Abbasids. Abbasids. Abbasids. Abbasids. Abbasids. Abbasids.

Our sultan takes over, taxes the church, while welcoming Islam.

We conquer Byzantine at Manzikert, 1071 CE!

Mahmud of Ghazni. Mahmud of Ghazni.

He leads us in Afghanistan. Leads us in Afghanistan!

We plunder many temples while making mosques!

Later we become the Sultanate of Delhi.

14th century ruler, by name of Tamerlane.

His charisma won followers,

Made a capital at Samarkand.

Later his land was split into four and eventually disappeared.

Chant: Ottomans. Ottomans. Ottomans. Ottomans. Ottomans. Ottomans. Ottomans. Ottomans.

Osman Bey he starts to rule in 1299.

We all know he wants to be a ghazi! (A Muslim religious warrior)

He starts the devshirme institution.

And creates Janissaries, a new type of military troops.

Then came Mehmed II, who conquered Constantinople in 1453.

Magnificent, magnificent, Süleyman the Magnificent.

He promoted our expansion, and we became a naval force.

Chant: Safavids. Safavids. Safavids! 1499!

There once was a boy named Ismail, who left the swamps to go and become a

Chant: Shah! Shah! Shah Ismail!

He wanted to be popular so he introduced

Twelver Shiism! (Spell) Twelver Shiism!

Redheads! Redheads! We’re too manly for gunpowder.

Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight!

Battle of Chaldiran, between the Ottomans and the Safavids.

The Ottomans never won because the Safavids were too strong.

Shah Abbas the Great came and made a capital at Isfahan.

Isfahan the great trading center, life was never the same.

A man named Babur, Chagatai Turk, in 1523, decided to be like Tamerlane and made the Mughals!

Akbar was his intelligent grandson, but Aurangzeb expanded.

He expanded so much that there was much tension between the Hindus and Muslims of India.

There once was a thing called Tanzimat,

It advocated new legal systems, and all that.

Enlightenment, constitutional foundations were great,

But the laws and religion caused problems, aka fate.

The a group with name of Young Ottomans came,

And Tanzimat was declared lame, for

These people wanted individual freedom,

But in the end, did they eventually beat ‘em?

Young Turks fought for lots of reforms,

They had ideas that weren’t the norm.

Such as people’s education,

And women’s emancipation.

Sultan Abd al-Hamid was dethroned,

The sultans never again ruled, so they groaned.

Later on the empire barely survived,

But their self-determination still thrived.

Atatürk tried to modernize.

But did he ever realize,

That he would die?

Then came the Republic of Turkey,

Yet now their future still remains- murky!
