TEST – 8 WEEKS!!!!

HOW TO STUDY FOR THE AP EXAM AT TEST

(Email me with questions or requests for me to print things for you if you are EdLine challenged)

1. Reading the chapters – remember 1914-present has the same percentage on the test as all of Foundations!

2. Work on charts, current and older ones: Society, and comparative.

3. Make sure you know your basic eras - look at the big picture notes for each of our units, Stearns and Strayer has some nice overviews to his units in his book as well.

4. Study your regions - you have the regions map. Also take time to familiarize yourself with the major cities (on EdLine) and to skim over the maps across times (also EdLine). If some of those major civilizations are unfamiliar, look them up or ask me.

5. Know your basic belief systems (you received a chart early on).

6. Looking at the art PowerPoints would be very useful for this endeavor. You will not need to identify works by name, but rather by civilization/society/belief system.

7. Peruse era review sheets (on EdLine). Look up things that draw a blank, reread (or read for the first time as the case might be) any chapters you missed.

8. Review rubrics for the three essays. Pay special attention to the DBQ rubric – it takes the most work.

9. Examine the sample CCOTs and C&Cs questions on my googlepages website. Make sure you try the questions from various possible regions.

10. If you have concerns with any of this come and see me – lunch, or after school sessions, if Tuesdays do not work for you, let me know in advance and I’ll try to rearrange my schedule.

WHAT IF I STILL CAN’T FINISH AN ESSAY?

  • You need to do practice essays. Lots of them! I have more DBQs that I can print out or put on EdLine. Do them. Again if you want to give yourself more than 50 minutes to start with, that is fine, but get to the point that you are completing them in 50 minutes (if you have more time super).
  • Do the potential Comparative and CCOT essays on the website. Feel free to study for them, and at first give yourself more time than just 40 minutes, but keep doing them until you can complete the task in less than 40 minutes, ideally 30 (you will want more time on the DBQ).

WHAT IF I CAN’T WRITE ESSAYS?

  • I can have some after school / lunch sessions in April and early May per request for those needing help in essays.
  • If timing is your problem, (and you are not alone) I can’t help you much beyond the points above. Do practice essays, those will be your ticket in to some of the practice sessions.
  • If you are unclear about how to do certain essays first go back over the handouts you have received. (If you have lost them go to the website/EdLine, they are on there.) Read them carefully and email or write me the questions that you have on them. I need specific areas that are giving you concern, not simply ‘I don’t get it.’

WHAT ELSE?

· Don’t waste your money on review books; I can check out books to those that are interested.

· I will be giving you several things to help you review, (including dates, people, cities, maps, etc.) but frankly the best to use are the Era review sheets.

· If we have time we will also be doing PowerPoint reviews of certain themes, feel free to request some.

· We will also be doing a lot of mini-essays or 5 minute outlining of questions. These will largely be CCOT and comparative questions taken from the pool of questions which are on the website now.

· Stay healthy and well-rested!
