Act 4

SCENE I

Enter Doctor, Pantalon, and Diana.

PANTALON encourages Diana to be merry, saying, That if the Bridegrooms did not arrive, or Tidings of them, next Day, he wou’d think of some other Match for her and her Sister. She refuses any Husband unless of her own Choice. Pantalon adds that he’ll consider of it; in the mean while she must not continue sorrowful; to prevent which he’d get a Master of Musick to teach her and divert melancholy Thoughts. She consenting, the Doctor procures a Master accordingly. [Exeunt severally.


SCENE II

Enter Brighella.

He had been observing, overheard the whole Matter, and resolves to make use of this Opportunity.


SCENE III

Enter Silvio and Cintio.

Brighella tells them how Pantalon, seeing the Delay of the Bridegrooms, had propos’d another Match to his Daughters; that a Letter was necessary to be convey’d to them lest they shou’d condescend, and, as the Doctor was charg’d with finding of a Musick Master for them, he had Thoughts of introducing Harlequin as such that he might deliver it safe. They approve, and go in search of Harlequin. [Exeunt.

Argentina, who had been aside observing, says she’ll discover all the Roguery. [Exit.


SCENE IV

Scene changes into a large Hall. A Spinnet, Chairs, and Musical Books.

Enter Pantalon and Diana.

Telling her He’ll not be so precise upon her, as to the Time past; that as she had a tolerable good Voice, he’d have her apply herself to Musick, it being an innocent Diversion. — Knocking at the Door, Pantalon goes to see who it is.


SCENE V

Enter Harlequin in Disguise as Master of Musick.

He strives to deliver the Letter by the Candle. But singing a Duetto with Diana, slily gives it her.


SCENE VI

Enter Argentina in Disguise also as Master of Musick.

Says, she had been sent by the Doctor. Pantalon replies that the other Gentleman had also been sent for before. She quarrels with Harlequin, and discovers all. Pantalon draws, and drives Harlequin out of the Room. [Exeunt.


SCENE VII

Prospect changes.

Enter Silvio, Cintio, and Brighella.

Waiting the Success of the Letter, intimating that Harlequin was in the House. Hearing Pantalon's Voice within they all retire.


SCENE VIII

Enter Pantalon in Pursuit of Harlequin.

After he drove him off the Stage, he was obliged to provide a Bravo to watch his House from further Insults. Brighella being aside has heard enough. [Exit with Silvio and Cintio.


SCENE IX

Enter Doctor.

Informs them, that he had spoke with a Master of Musick, and suppos’d he was come before that Time. Pantalon rehearses what had happen’d, and resolves to keep a Bravo to guard his House; the Doctor goes to speak to a Friend about it.


SCENE X

Enter Harlequin in Disguise as a Bravo.

Comically shews his Bravery; Pantalon and the Doctor being frighten’d, cast themselves on the Ground; demands whether they are Partizans to 300 more he’d lately kill’d: They answer, No. He tells them his Name is Scanderbeck, eats Bumbs, &c. Pantalon hires him for a Bravo, threatens to cut the Suitors in pieces. The Doctor goes to the Post-house. [Exit.

Silvio and Cintio being within, Pantalon enters, and retires, inveighing against Brighella and Harlequin. The latter reprimands him, and goes to the House, undresses, and goes to look for the Lovers, but is reprov’d by Pantalon, whose Bravo comically personates two different Persons in his Progress to and from the Tower at the same time. [Exit Pantalon.

Harlequin espies Silvio and Cintio coming, beckons to them, they go to the House.


SCENE XI

Scene changes to a great Hall.

Enter Pantalon, Diana and Victoria.

Tells them he had hired a Bravo who had already kill’d Silvio and Cintio. They seem Angry. He calls the Bravo, who threatens them. They humble. He makes himself known to them. They agree to make their Escape from their Father. Harlequin orders them to the next Apartment, and follows them. Pantalon calls his servants to bring him his Supper. They bring in a Table with Bread, Wine, Mackroons, &c.

Enter Silvio, and stands by him.

Pantalon is frighten’d. [Exit Silvio.

Enter Diana.

Pantalon tells her he had seen Silvio's Ghost; she says, he's mistaken. [Exit Diana. Pantalon naming Cintio sees him standing by him, is frighten’d, calls. [Exit Cintio.

Enter Victoria.

Tells her Father, ’twas only a fancy. [Exit.

Pantalon believes her, and sits down again.


SCENE XII

Enter Silvio and Cintjo.

They sit at Supper with him.

Harlequin cribs the Mackroons; but being discovered, Pantalon draws. They all run away.
