In the reading class in week six we looked at some key terms related to referencing. Take a couple of minutes to remind yourself what the following concepts mean:
The Harvard system
In-text citations
Reference management software
A reference list
Formatting
We introduced the idea of paraphrasing in one of our speaking classes earlier this term. What do you remember about the exercises we did in this seminar? How easy/difficult was it to present other people's ideas in your own words?
If you have not already done so, make sure you book mark the University's Harvard Referencing guide.
On the first page of the preparation materials we looked at an example of a paragraph which contains in-text citations. Share your notes on the following questions:
How many different ways are in-text citations presented?
What language is used to connect ideas together?
When do you think it is important to give page numbers in the citation?
In the preparation work we also looked at reporting verbs. How do these kinds of verbs vary in their meaning? What examples can you give?
You are going to put together a short paragraph which summarises the ideas of your peers about the use of public space in towns and cities around the world. Each person will play the role of knowledgeable expert on a place that they're familiar with. So first of all, spend a couple of minutes thinking about somewhere that you know well. This could be your hometown, or a place that you've visited and found interesting. The more distinctive the location the better. Once everyone is ready, you will be put into pairs in breakout rooms where you will have 5 minutes to ask each other questions about outdoor life in your chosen towns. Remember to make notes on what everyone has to say about their chosen city. Here is a template that you can use to record information.
You might want to ask:
Is there a 'downtown' area where people congregate? If so, what kinds of activities do they engage in?
How popular are shopping and malls, and is this changing due to competition from online retailers?
Is it more of an indoors or outdoors city?
Gather your notes and summarise the thoughts and ideas you've collected in a single cohesive paragraph. Think about how you will incorporate your references:
Is the focus on the idea or the person?
Which reporting verb is most appropriate?
What lexis will you use to connect the different ideas?
Once you've finished, upload your paragraph to Eduflow and start the peer feedback process.
